Garcia makes pitching debut in rout against Davis

SACRAMENTO, Calif. – Six St. Francis players collected two hits apiece while sophomore Alex Garcia made her pitching debut as the Troubadours rode a 9-0 start to a 14-2 varsity win, while Sorina Pometta's two-run, opposite-field triple in the seventh help complete a comeback from a 5-0 deficit in a 5-5 junior varsity tie, as St. Francis and Davis squared off in a Delta League softball doubleheader Tuesday afternoon.

The Troubie varsity wins its sixth straight game to improve to 17-2 overall and 6-1 in league play. The junior varsity moves to 11-2-1 for the year, with a 4-1-1 record against the Delta League.

St. Francis had two hits apiece from shortstop Francesca Guerrera, third baseman Kayla Garber, pitcher-DP Hope Jenkins, first baseman Hailey Strange, left fielder Olivia McFarland and catcher Isabelle Vela. Jenkins struck out the side in the top of the first, ignited a nine-run rally in the bottom of the first, then handed the pitching circle over to Garcia, whose only previous appearance had come in a preseason exhibition.

Garcia threw the remaining four innings before the 10-run rule was invoked. She surrendered five hits and just one earned run. On the offensive side, Strange and McFarland also drove in three runs each, while Strange, Hope Jenkins, Grace Jenkins Vela and Haley Kim each doubling during the contest.

On the JV field, Davis took a 5-0 lead on the strength of a bases-loaded triple in the fourth, but St. Francis scrapped its way to a pair of runs in the sixth, mostly on wild pitches. Left fielder Rylee Coauette also came up with an acrobatic catch to rob Alessandra Trask of a hit, then gunned down a runner on second to hold the Devils.

Then in the seventh, Taylor Lewis led off by slashing a 3-0 pitch to right. Addison Hutchcraft reached when a bad hop eluded the Blue Devil second baseman, putting two runners on. Pometta followed with her triple to right field, cutting the deficit to 5-4, then Taylor Trafican sent a bloop single down the right field line to bring in Pometta for the equalizer.

Davis freshman Kaylie Adams got her team out of the inning with a 5-5 tie. By Sac-Joaquin Section rule, JV games may end in a tie upon the completion of the seventh inning or at the two-hour mark.

St. Francis returns to action for more Delta League play at Cosumnes Oaks on Thursday. Game times are 4 p.m. on both diamonds.
