Troubies nip Crushers in pitchers' duel

NAPA, Calif. – Senior catcher Grace Jenkins launched a solo shot in the sixth inning while her twin sister Hope Jenkins fanned 11 batters in a two-hit shutout, as St. Francis edged Vintage in a non-league prep softball battle Saturday afternoon.

The Troubadours, fourth in the Sac-Joaquin Section by MaxPreps, improve to 21-3 for the year. The Crushers, ranked fourth in the North Coast Section, moves to 15-3 overall.

H. Jenkins gave up singles in the first and seventh and walked three. Her counterpart, senior Raimy Gamsby, also allowed just two hits and struck out 15 against one walk. 

Alex Garcia led off the second with a hit to center but was thrown out attempting to stretch to a double. Isabella Vela reached on a dropped third strike later in that frame and Hailey Strange opened the fifth with a walk and worked her way to third, but both Troubies were stranded in those respective frames.

G. Jenkins finally broke up the scoreless tie the in the sixth. With one out and after fighting off a 1-2 count, she launched a blast to center for her seventh homer of the season. Hope Jenkins was hit by pitch later in that sixth and replaced by courtesy runner Natalie Vigil, but Gamsby got out of the inning with a pop-up.

This is the second time this season that St. Francis ventured outside the Sacramento area to face some of Northern California's top competition. The Troubies also went 3-0 at the NorCal Leadoff Classic in Tracy during April, beating Lincoln (Stockton), Central Catholic and Enochs.

St. Francis varsity returns to action for its regular-season finale against Pleasant Grove on Tuesday. This date serves as Senior Day for Kayla GarberAmy Abueg, Haley Kim and the two Jenkins sisters; but also will feature the annual softball Booster-Q barbecue and a gathering of swim, dive and water polo enthusiasts charged with creating elevated noise levels to help the campaign for an on-campus aquatics center.

The Troubie JV are also scheduled to play a make-up game at Sheldon on Monday prior the the PG doubleheader.
