Troubies sweep home doubleheader against CO

SACRAMENTO, Calif. – Left fielder Amy Abueg and catcher Grace Jenkins each hit 2-for-3 to lead St. Francis to a 12-2 win over Cosumnes Oaks on the Schuster Field varsity diamond, while freshman Rylee Coauette fired a three-hit shutout to boost the Troubadours to a 14-0 victory across the way on the JV field during a Delta League softball doubleheader Tuesday afternoon.

The SFHS varsity improves to 10-1 overall and 2-0 in league play. The jayvees are now 9-1 with a 2-0 Delta League mark.

The Troubie varsity scored three runs in the first and four runs in the second to craft an early 7-0 start, in part due to two stolen bases and with the aid of three passed balls and a wild pitch. Abueg led off the first inning and had one of four straight SF singles in that second.

A Wolfpack error also helped St. Francis push across two more runs in the third, then Grace Jenkins led off the fourth with a double, stole third, then scored on an Alex Garcia sacrifice fly to extend the lead to 10-0. The Troubies appeared to be in line to invoke the 10-run rule in the fifth before CO's Bella Robinson doubled as part of a two-run top of the frame. Instead, Olivia McFarland singled and Claire Krotine doubled as part of a two-run St. Francis fifth, putting the rule into effect.

On the JV diamond, Coauette struck out four batters and had 10 other outs completed within the infield in her five-inning shutout. She ran into trouble in the second when she loaded the bases with two outs, but she escaped the jam by taking a comebacker and firing home for the force out.

Meanwhile, the JV bats exploded for 13-0 start in the first three frames: seven runs in the first, two in the second, and four in the third. Left fielder Hailey Strange and catcher Natalie Vigil each had two hits. Strange singled in the first and tripled in the second, while Vigil doubled in each of the second and fourth stanzas.

Both Troubadour teams continue Delta League play on the road with a Thursday set at Franklin. Both games begin at 4 p.m.
