Gonzalez leads Troubies at SFL frosh-soph championships

GRANITE BAY, Calif. – Freshman Gaby Gonzalez won the 200-meter dash and finished second in the 100 for 18 total points, while sophomore Christie So captured the discus throw, leading St. Francis at the Sierra Foothill League Frosh-Soph track & field championship meet, held at Granite Bay Wednesday night.

St. Francis scored 90 total points, finishing third behind Davis (125) and the host Grizzlies (96). Whitney (44.33), Del Oro (34), Rocklin (31), Oak Ridge (23.66) and Folsom (20) rounded out the fourth through eighth places in the team standings.

Gonzalez won the 200 with a time of 27.29 seconds, 0.18 seconds ahead of Granite Bay's Payton Osenbaugh for the title. This came shortly after Gonzalez runnered-up in the 100 with a 13.22 clocking, just .04 behind Osenbaugh. So won the discus so handily that her third-best attempt would have tied for the meet title: she went 81-11 in the second round, improved to an 85-9 in the fourth, then popped her winning 87-4 on her fifth throw of the day.

Both of Gonzalez' sprint times represented personal bests. Her old 100 PR was a wind-aided 13.36 at Bella Vista's Bronco Speed Festival while her previous 200 best was a 27.87 at the third SFL center meet on April 9.

While Gonzalez accounted for the highest SF individual total, the Troubies picked up a sizable portion of their scoring from depth rather than high podium finishes. For example, in the high jump, sophomore Anastacia Uniza finished third with a 4-0 leap while Cassidy Butler, Olivia Santos and Ari Iniguez tied for fourth place, resulting in 13 of the 31 possible points in that event.

The Troubies' highest-scoring JV event ultimately was the 3,200, in which freshmen Emily Colonnello and Sophia Hernandez crossed in second and third places, respectively, for 14 team tallies. Colonnello went 12:10.34, less than two seconds behind champ Cora Bowman of Davis (12:08.75). Hernandez followed behind Colonnello at 12:34.03. Colonnello also took part in a 12-point push in the 1,600 early in the meet. She took fifth at 5:42.43, with Mia Hollar placing third (5:36.97) and Emilia Ryan in fourth (5:41.96).

Freshman Carley Glenn had another second-place showing for St. Francis. She came within an inch of her personal record and two inches of a JV title with a 24-3 in the shot put. So was not far behind in fourth at 24-0.5.

As the meet name suggests, Wednesday's session consisted of frosh-soph events with the exception of the varsity 3,200 and 4x800 relays. Sophomore Sunny Schranz and freshman Miya Menza finished 11th (11:28.76) and 12th (11:28.81), respectively, but their times eclipsed the at-large qualifying standard of 11:29.77 to the Sac-Joaquin Section Division meet on May 13 and 15.

The Troubadours' 4x800 placed fifth at 10:36.70, scoring two points toward the varsity scoring on Saturday. The top 10 varsity finishers automatically advance to the SJS divisional, meaning all six long relays – regardless of time or place – qualified to move on so long as each posted a legal finish.

The remainder of the SFL varsity championships take place during Saturday's session, which starts at 9 a.m. at GBHS.
