DAVIS, Calif. – Sophomore Jasleen Gandhoke won the varsity high jump with a personal best of five feet, five inches while fellow 10th-grader Tayli Paeu-Lindgren made a dramatic prep debut of 33-7.75 in the triple jump, highlighting St. Francis in the first of three Sierra Foothill League dual meets at Davis Senior High's Ron & Mary Brown Stadium Wednesday.
The meet featured a total of five schools: host Davis, St. Francis, Jesuit, Folsom and Oak Ridge. It was originally intended as a double dual – Troubies vs. Blue Devils, Troubies vs. Bulldogs, with no scoring against the Trojans – but meet officials had not actually scored the meet as of 11:30 p.m. Wednesday night.
Gandhoke improved on her previous high jump best by an inch, with 5-5 ranking third in school history behind only Isabella Palchak (5-4.25), Tifani Grimes (5-7) and Karen Lysaght (6-0). That trio later competed at Cal, Army and Stanford, respectively. Gandhoke also ducked away from the high jump apron to win the varsity 100-meter hurdles (16.65) and 300-meter hurdles (48.98).
Paeu-Lindgren appeared seven times in the high jump and qualified for the Sac-Joaquin Section Div. I championship meet in the long jump as a freshman, but had never competed in the triple jump until Wednesday's SFL meet. In her third attempt, she popped the 33 feet-7.75. That effort would rank as the best in program history for a sophomore, and the No. 9 mark overall.
However, meet officials did not record a wind reading to make Paeu-Lindgren's result a wind-legal mark, even though the sprint results on the opposite side of Halden Field suggest she would have faced a headwind ranging from 1.5 to as much as 3.4 meters per second had a gauge been in place.
Freshman Miya Menza also enjoyed a strong overall day, finishing second only to Davis standout Norah Feldt in the 800 at 2:28.11, before finishing the night with a dominating victory in the 3,200. Menza crossed in 11:26.66, almost 40 seconds ahead of runner-up and teammate Sophia Kadel's 12:05.93.
Sophomore Alexa Randall gave SF a third varsity event win, thanks to a 1:01.35 in the 400. Freshman Brynn Baker was a double winner in junior varsity action, claiming both the 200 (27.96) and 400 (1:02.11). Impressively, Baker ended up as the Troubies' second-fastest runner in each of those events regardless of division, and would have placed third overall in the varsity 400 behind only Randall and Davis' Maya Yikilmaz (1:01.95).
Wednesday's competition is the first of three SFL center meets during the regular season. The Troubies compete in another double dual against Rocklin and host Whitney on March 19, then take part in a triple dual with Del Oro, Granite Bay and Oak Ridge in a meet hosted by Folsom on April 9. The three center meets, combined with the SFL championship meet in early May, determine the final league standings.
St. Francis returns to action on Friday at Placer's LeFebvre Relays, then a smaller delegation of Troubies will compete at the Sac State High School Classic on Saturday. The Placer meet begins at 1:30 p.m.
UPDATE 3/6: The meet ended up being scored as a quadrangular rather than as separate head-to-head matchups... Among varsity events, Davis won with 61 points, with St. Francis (50), Oak Ridge (21) and Folsom (4) behind... For JV events, St. Francis led the way with 55, followed by Davis (53), Oak Ridge (14) and Folsom (13).
