Track and Field Opens with Win at Distance Wars

HUGHSON, Calif. – The St. Francis track and field team won the season-opening Distance Wars hosted by Hughson High School Friday. The Troubadours scored 81.5 points to claim first over second-place Lincoln of Stockton with 30 points. St. Francis won all five events.

Junior Hanna Hekkanen took the 800 meters in 2:22.25 with senior Grace Harrison crossing sixth (2:31) among five runners in the toop 10.

Senior Isabell Fauria and sophomore Cate Joaquin went 1-2 in the 1600 meters in 5:05 with senior Haley Silva (5:12,3), sophomore Tatiana Cornejo (5:19.82) and Hekkanen (5:24) placing fourth, fifth and sixth overall. SF has eight in the top 10 in the event. Both Fauria and Joaquin posted times among the top five in the state in the opening weekend.

Freshman Paige Quigley won her prep track debut in the 3200 meters in 11:49.3 with senior Elizabeth Cole posting a personal-best 13:04.9 to cross fifth and sophomore McKenna McKrell in seventh in seventh (13:12).

The St. Francis Distance Medley Relay won their event in a meet record 12:35.2 as Haley Silva, Fauria, Joaquin and Cornejo combined for the victory. It was the second-fastest time in the event in the state so far this season.

Junior Molly Chambers won the pole vault with a 10-0 clearance, just two inches off her personal-best, to set the meet record in her event.
