Troubies blank Davis to close out regular season

DAVIS, Calif. – Senior defender Estella Bacsafra assisted a Sarah Bashore goal then scored another of her own to lead St. Francis offensively in a 2-0 shutout of Davis during Sierra Foothill League girls' soccer action at Ron & Mary Brown Stadium Monday night.

The Troubadours end their regular season with a 13-5-4 overall record and a 7-5-2 SFL mark.  The Blue Devils slip to 8-4-4 for the year, with a 6-4-4 record in league play. Del Oro, whose lone SFL loss came against St. Francis, won the league title with 29 points in the standings (8-1-5). Rocklin has 25 points (7-2-4), with Tuesday's finale against Whitney (1-12-0) still ahead. The Troubies finish third in league with 23 points, one ahead of Davis.

Bashore broke the scoreless tie in the 68th minute, or 12:10 remaining in the contest, on a play initiated by a Jada Dwyre throw-in. Normally known for her long throws, the Davisite opted to enter the ball to the nearby flank to Bacsafra, who in turn launched an arcing serve to a leaping Bashore near the left post of the goal.

Then less than four minutes later, Bacsafra netted a goal from nearly the same spot as her assist. Junior Miley Blough played a negative ball to her senior teammate, who promptly delivered a blast into the cage for the insurance goal.

St. Francis and Davis battled to a scoreless tie in the first half, although the Troubies largely controlled possession for the majority of play prior to the break. Sophomore Norah White had the two closest threats early on, with a pair of shots sailing over the crossbar in the 14th and the 16th minutes, respectively. Bashore's slide tackle in the 18th gave way to a Blough attempt, but that ball also missed high.

Meanwhile, the Troubies locked down on defense to keep their hosts off the board. Goalkeeper Mia Rabinovitz posted a sliding save against UC Davis commit Miya Alamares in the 10th. Then in the 23rd, when SF was called for a handball, senior Kailani Compton sent a hard shelf on frame that Rabinovitz knocked over the top. Koerwitz and sophomore Lacey Harmon also came up with key field blocks in the 31st and 40th minutes to further hold the Blue Devils scoreless.

The tide turned in the early going after the break, with Davis outshooting SF by a 3-0 margin during the first 18 minutes. Junior Madison Lujan then appeared to have a clear route to the goal in the 59th, only for Koerwitz and Madeline Squaglia to crash hard on the Blue Devil forward. Lujan managed to get another crack on the ball on a corner kick, but Bashore, Koerwitz, Marissa Ow and Giuliana Del Guerra had her surrounded in the box. Rabinovitz also came up strong in the 64th when she successfully challenged Jordan Meade's break for the goal for a key steal.

The momentum eventually shifted back to the Troubies, leading to the Bashore and Bacsafra goals. Davis had an opportunity to spoil the shutout in the 78th, but Koerwitz' leaping header cleared out a corner kick. The Blue Devils did not manage any more shots in the final minutes of the contest.

St. Francis' JV Gold and Red squads closed out their 2024-25 seasons as part of the tripleheader. JV Gold notched a 3-0 shutout in the finale, with Emma Kryski, Monet Zauner and Azaria Agbodike scoring first-half goals. Zauner created the Kryski goal when she drew a foul inside the penalty box in the 13th minute. The ball was spotted just outside the 18, but Kryski delivered her free kick over the top and in. Zauner then netted her 22nd goal of the season in the 22nd minute, converting a Charlotte Lippi entry pass into a scoring tally. Finally, Kryski won a 50-50 in the midfield, heading the ball to Agbodike, who sliced and diced her way through the attacking third for the game's third goal.

Agbodike finishes her season with 12 goals, matching fellow froshie Brynn Baker for second on the team. Kryski's goal represents her 11th of the year.

JV Red led off the tripleheader with a 3-1 loss to Davis' frosh-soph, oddly scoring its only goal while short-handed from a red card. After surrendering goals in the 10th, 47th and 75th, St. Francis got on the board in the final minutes when Paityn Lowery scored the follow-up on a Josie Quiniola blocked shot. Lowery finished the season as Red's leader in goals (9) and assists (4), with Elizabeth McNearney ranking second on the team in each category (7 goals, 3 assists). Quiniola's assist gives her three to match McNearney in that department.

Gold ends its season undefeated at 18-0-3 (11-0-3 SFL) while Red wraps up an 8-10-2 year (5-8-1 SFL). The Troubie varsity squad will learn its Sac-Joaquin Section postseason opponent on Wednesday. St. Francis entered Monday's play ranked fifth in the CIF-SJS Division I, trailing Inderkum, Del Oro, Gregori and Davis.
