Top-ranked Thunder stuns Troubies in stoppage time

SACRAMENTO, Calif. – Seniors Jada Dwyre and Sofia Rabinovitz connected on a goal in the 15th minute but St. Francis surrendered back-to-back goals in the final minutes to fall to Rocklin, 2-1, in the varsity portion of a Sierra Foothill League girls' soccer tripleheader at Cristo Rey's Adamson Family Sports Complex Tuesday night.

The Troubadours dip to 8-4-3 for the year and 3-4-1 in SFL play. The Thunder, ranked No. 1 in the Sac-Joaquin Section by MaxPreps, remains undefeated at 8-0-2, 6-0-2 in league action.

Dwyre fired a long throw-in from the left sideline into the box, finding the Hastings College commit for the header. That 1-0 lead held up for the remainder of the half, surviving a near miss from senior Karlee Larson in the 39th minute and a shot on goal by sophomore Ava Olimpiada. Rabinovitz almost scored a second goal in the opening minute of the second half, when she slid just inches short of a Sara Ellis cross by the right post.

Meanwhile, St. Francis dodged additional bullets with Rocklin junior Gia Costanzo's shot striking the post in the 62nd, and Larson's attempting doing the same just four minutes later. Costanzo provided yet another scare in the 68th, fielding a corner kick and heading the ball just high of the frame. Mia Rabinovitz had four saves in the first half, then another four in the second. She also swooped in to snag a ball before any Thunder striker could reach it in the 79th, further protecting her team's one-goal edge.

However, that lead finally came to an end with just 46 minutes left in regulation, with junior Allyson Walker finding freshman Sydney Vu with a cross from the right sideline. Troubie junior Miley Blough had two shots blocked on the other side after time expired. Then another minute into stoppage time, another Rocklin freshman, Ella Johnson, booted a ball from the right flank that found the left side of the cage for the unlikely go-ahead.

SF nearly salvaged a draw when Blough fired a free kick from nearly midfield, but the blast missed just wide of the Thunder cage.

The varsity loss followed a 2-0 setback for the Troubies' JV Red squad, with freshman Ashleigh Fosson coming up with goals in the 29th and 76th minutes.

St. Francis had its best chance to get on the board in the final minutes before halftime. Ava Arnold drew a foul above the box, and Elizabeth McNearney's ensuing kick eluded Rocklin keeper Alexis Dwight – only to have sophomore Abby Pfitzer backing her up on the opposite side of the goal. Two minutes later, Arnold delivered a cross to Paityn Lowery in the box, with Dwight punching the shot out of the way. Rocklin successfully defended against consecutive corner kicks.

JV Gold finished the evening with a 3-1 victory over the Rocklin jayvees. Tallas Schaedler assisted Azaria Agbodike on a corner kick in the 24th minute, then scored a goal of her own thanks to a Monet Zauner outlet in the 30th. Then Zauner assisted Annika Rose on the Troubies' third goal in the 47th: Dwight halted Zauner's initial shot, but Rose was already in position for the putback.

Only a successful Thunder penalty kick in the 75th prevented Gold from recording a shutout.

Zauner raised her season totals to 16 goals and four assists for 36 total points. Schaedler's corner kick marked her team-leading seventh assist of the year. Meanwhile, Agbodike now has four goals in just her sixth game of her freshman season.

Tuesday's set concluded a four-game homestand for the three Troubie soccer squads. The return to action at Folsom on Thursday, with JV Gold leading off the SFL tripleheader at 3:30 p.m. Then varsity and JV Gold head to Christian Brothers on Saturday for the always-anticipated "Holy Cup" rivalry doubleheader at noon.
