Rabinovitz' hat trick helps Troubies sink Vikings

ROSEVILLE, Calif. – Senior forward Sofia Rabinovitz scored her first Troubadour hat trick while junior Miley Blough added two goals and an assist, leading St. Francis to a 7-0 win over Oakmont in non-league girls' soccer action Thursday night.

The Troubadours improve to 1-0-1 for the season. The varsity-only contest was a late addition to the schedule, with SF replacing Placer in what was originally intended as a Viking-Hillman doubleheader.

Juniors Madeline Squaglia and Holland Sperber each scored to account for the remaining goals. Senior Jada Dwyre and junior Sara Ellis led the way with two assists each, with Mia Nelson, Lacey Harmon and Lily Hall also getting credit for dimes in the contest.

Rabinovitz scored the game's third overall goal in the 26th minute on a header of a long Dwyre throw-in, then completed her brace when Ellis found her in the box in the 46th. The Hastings commit then tacked on her third goal in the 56th after Troubie defender Maggie Koerwitz relieved Oakmont sophomore Gracie Grant of the ball near the center circle. Blough transitioned upfield, then found Rabinovitz inside the 18 for the game's seventh and final goal.

Oddly, Rabinovitz never posted a hat trick in her seasons with St. Francis' JV Red and JV Gold squads, despite 32 career goals as a sub-varsity player. This marked her eighth, ninth and 10th career tallies in 31 career games on the Troubies' top squad.

Blough scored in each half, sending a free kick from well beyond the penalty box that kissed the crossbar before eluding Viking keeper Cynthia Pena in the 21st minute. Her goal in the 49th came courtesy of another set piece, this time by a teammate: after Sperber was fouled hard near her own bench, Harmon sent the ensuing free kick to Nelson, who then redirected the ball back to Blough for the blast.

Dwyre previously assisted Squaglia for the game's first goal in the 12th. Sperber had the Troubies' fourth, finishing a put-back after Pena initially stopped an Ellis shot from the right side with about five minutes remaining before the halftime break.

Freshman Mia Rabinovitz and senior Sophia Hendrix combined for the shutout, guarding the SF cage for 50 and 30 minutes, respectively. This marked the debut for Hendrix, a former Troubadour basketball player. Each keeper posted one save for the night.

St. Francis returns to action in its Sierra Foothill League opener at Rocklin on December 12, with the two-day Raider Cup Classic immediately following. In the interim, JV Red heads to Contra Costa County to compete in Carondelet's Cougar JV Classic on Friday and Saturday.
