SACRAMENTO, Calif. – Senior Brianna McGahan netted 22 points while junior Sydney Teoh and sophomore Lexi London each drained four three-pointers toward scoring totals of 16 and 14, respectively, as St. Francis rolled past Pleasant Grove, 64-27, in the varsity finale of a Delta League girls' basketball doubleheader Friday night.
The Troubadours win their third straight, improving to 14-13 overall and finishing 9-3 in the conference race. That puts SF in a tie for second with Cosumnes Oaks in the event of a Franklin win against Sheldon.
Additionally, St. Francis honored two senior players prior to the regular-season finale, recognizing McGahan and post Chidera Okoye as part of the evening. The Senior Night festivities also drew a larger student section than usual.
In addition to her team-high 22 points, McGahan also led the way in rebounds (eight) and assists (six), while matching freshman Tayli Paeu-Lindgren for the lead in steals (three). Additionally, she joined Teoh and London in the three-point fireworks, with that trio combining for 11-for-18 (.611) from outside the arc. On top of that, McGahan and Okoye each enjoyed three-point plays in the form of an and-one situation. Finally, Caitlin Lee was fouled in front of her own bench midway through the fourth period, then went to the line to hit all three free throws for yet another three-point play.
McGahan hit threes from each side of the court as part of a 16-4 start to the contest, then Teoh had seven points as part of a run of 15 unanswered to pad the advantage to 31-6. Junior Aubrey O'Donnell added to that shutout stretch when she blocked Marissa Perkins in the final minute of the first. St. Francis led by a 41-11 margin at the halftime break, and entered the fourth period with a 41-point edge (59-18) to invoke the running clock rule.
The 11 made three-pointers represents the most by the Troubies since going 11-for-26 against Kennedy at the Takayama Memorial tourney at Del Oro back on December 15, 2022. In fact, the team's overall success rate of 55.0 percent (11-for-20) is the best single-game performance by a Troubie team among games with at least 20 attempts in the MaxPreps era of the program (2004-present).
Prior to the varsity win, the Troubies' JV Gold squad also flexed its three-point game in a 60-11 drubbing of the Eagles. Nevaeh Gavino landed two such long-range shots as part of her 10 points, with Annie Swanson, Bianca Espanola and Sienna Dukes also burying threes as St. Francis finished a perfect 5-for-5 from beyond the 19-foot-9 threshold. Meanwhile, Layla Hernandez pounded away inside to the tune of 6-for-10 shooting and five rebounds. Swanson shot 4-for-4 overall (nine total points) while adding five assists.
JV Gold wraps up the 2023-24 season with a 19-9 overall record and an 11-1 mark in the Delta League, having won 13 of its last 15 games of the year.
St. Francis will now await its fate in the Sac-Joaquin Section postseason. The league champion earns an automatic berth to the Division I draw, while the next four garner at-large spots in either the D-II or D-I tourneys, depending on seeding. The Troubies entered their Friday finale as the No. 11-ranked team in the SJS D-II, according to MaxPreps.
The selection show for the basketball playoffs will run on the NFHS Network (https://www.nfhsnetwork.com/associations/cifsjs) on Saturday, starting at 1:30 pm.
