JV Gold rallies late in tourney win over Kennedy

SACRAMENTO, Calif. – Sophomore Annie Swanson knocked down a three-pointer with 2:19 remaining in the contest then freshman Audrey Bashore followed with a game-winning baseline runner with 1:29 left, lifting St. Francis' JV Gold squad from a late deficit to a 43-41 win over Kennedy in the consolation semifinal of the La Salle Classic girls' basketball tournament at Christian Brothers Friday.

The Troubies improve to 4-5 for the season.

Sophomore guard Gianna Seghesio, on loan from the SF varsity squad, and freshman post Layla Hernandez each scored 11 points. Hernandez also collected a whopping 18 rebounds, including 12 on the offensive end. On the other hand, Swanson controlled the defensive boards, with eight of her 11 rebounds coming from the Cougar goal. Seghesio did most of her offensive work from beyond the arc, connecting on 3 of 4 three-point attempts.

Save for a 5-2 start, thanks to Caitlyn Lee setting up Seghesio for a corner three early in the first, SF trailed for most of the first half, falling to a 28-24 deficit at the halftime break. However, the Troubies stormed to 10 unanswered points out of the gate in the third period. Seghesio drained two more treys, Swanson fed Hernandez in the paint, and Bashore assisted Swanson as part of that run, which resulted in a 34-28 Troubie lead.

Still, Kennedy battled back, with freshman Emani Evans burying a three-pointer at the 5:48 mark in the fourth to give her team a 39-35 advantage. The Cougars continued to maintain their lead, largely on transition scores, until Swanson stepped up for her equalizer from the left free-throw extended spot. Less than a minute later, Bashore drove the left baseline before stepping up with a 12-foot runner for the go-ahead.

With 34 ticks left, Swanson came down the eighth of her defensive rebounds to give SF nearly one full shot clock with which to protect its lead.

The Troubies advance to Saturday's 10:30 a.m. consolation championship to face the winner of the Davis-CB game in the opposite semifinal.
