Troubies drop Day 2 tourney matchup with host Trojans

EL DORADO HILLS, Calif. – Freshman Sienna Dukes scored a career-high eight points while fellow ninth graders Abigail Hall and Lizzie David each added five, but St. Francis JV Gold fell to Oak Ridge's JV Navy by a 51-40 final in the consolation semifinal of Oak Ridge's Trojan Toss-Up tournament Friday.

The Troubadours' JV Red also lost its Saturday morning contest, falling to Folsom, 52-8.

Dukes scored on a three-point play with 39 seconds left in the first quarter to give JV Gold its only lead of 11-10, converted an assist from Hall late in the third period, then knocked down a three from the right side on an Annie Swanson pass for her eight points. For her part, Swanson scored a team-high nine points, all at the free-throw line (9-for-11).

David netted five points in the final 68 seconds of the first half to bring the deficit to 26-21 at the break. She slashed through the lane to convert an assist from Natalia Zitelli with 1:08 on the clock, then buried a three-pointer at the buzzer.

The Trojans stormed out to seven unanswered to start the third period, stretching their lead to 33-21 during a span in which SF managed only two shot attempts. Hall later scored a pair of putbacks in that frame, and assisted Dukes' bucket at 3:10, but the Troubies could not cut the deficit by fewer than eight points throughout the second half.

Dukes, Hall and Zitelli joined JV Gold after splitting most of the preseason between the Red and Gold squads. Friday's game also featured the return of sophomore guard Nevaeh Gavino, who contributed two field goals and two steals.

St. Francis JV Red managed three field goals in its loss to the Bulldogs in Friday's opener, with the third serving as the Troubies' biggest highlight: Amelin Pragasam, who earned a starting spot in the absence of usual starter Grace Gustorf, heaved a three-pointer with a minute left in the third frame for her first career basket.

Lily Frei and Minna Brindle also scored at the end of the first and second periods, respectively.

Both SF teams move to the seventh-place games of the frosh and JV brackets. JV Gold takes on Rocklin at 9:30 in the main Trojan Arena, while JV Red will face Twelve Bridges in the auxiliary gym at 10 a.m.
