JV Red closes season against Granite Bay

SACRAMENTO, Calif. – Freshman Jocelyn Villaflor scored a team-high five points, including a three-pointer early after the halftime break, but St. Francis JV Red ended its 2023-24 with a loss, falling to Granite Bay by a final of 36-7 in non-league frosh-soph basketball action Tuesday afternoon.

The Troubadours finished up at 3-13.

Tuesday's game also marked the third meeting between SF and GB, although the first since JV Gold had called up three of JV Red's most experienced players. The Grizzlies won the first matchup, 26-23, back on November 30; while the Troubies prevailed by a 28-24 final two weeks later.

After SF had surrendered 12 unanswered in the first period, Villaflor got her team on the board by sinking two free throws to start the second. Still, Granite Bay led, 19-2, at the break. Villaflor knocked down her trey from the top of the key with 5:16 to go in the third, then Meredith Little sank an 18-footer a few minutes later to bring the Grizzly lead to 23-7.

Granite Bay pulled away in the fourth, with Kaitlyn Beckham pouring in nine points in that frame alone. She also had scored six in the first period to finish with 15 points total.

While the JV Red season ended on Tuesday, St. Francis varsity and JV Gold continues their respective Delta League runs with a road game at Sheldon on Wedneday followed by the Senior Night home finale against Pleasant Grove on Friday. These final two games will solidify the league standings and determine seeding for the upcoming weekend's Sac-Joaquin Section postseason brackets.
