Rocklin's big bats sink Troubies heading into bye week

SACRAMENTO, Calif. – Junior Reese Lewis smacked a long RBI single in the sixth and opened the contest with three shutout innings in the pitching circle, but a three-run Thunder homer in the fourth and a two-run shot in the fifth doomed St. Francis to a 6-1 loss to Rocklin in Sierra Foothill League fastpitch action at Schuster Field Wednesday.

The Troubadours slip to 2-12 overall and 0-7 in league play. The Thunder, which entered the week ranked third in the Sac-Joaquin Section, improves to 13-2 for the year and 4-2 in the SFL.

Lewis had one of four hits for St. Francis, along with Claire Krotine (1-for-3), Isabella Barge (1-for-3) and Kinsley Imm (1-for-3). Imm also posted her team's only extra-base hit, driving a double to center in the second. However, Imm's hit came with the bases empty, as Barge was called out for leaving first base early just prior. Imm also ended up retired on the basepaths on a relatively fluke play: third baseman Brooke Lomelli mishandled a Marissa Jensen ground ball, thus opting to throw out Imm behind her. If Lomelli makes the play, Jensen would likely have been thrown out at first, but Imm then would have ended up 60 feet away from being the first SF run.

Meanwhile, Lewis retired six straight RHS batters to start the contest, then worked her way out of a jam in the third when an infield single resulted in Barge gunning down Sammie Snell at the plate to end the inning. However, the awoken Thunder bats continued into the fourth: a single from Katie Wetteland to lead off the frame, a Payton Prior double the center, then first baseman Savannah Lorenzini's three-run blast off the reliever Imm to break the scoreless tie.

Rocklin added to its lead with Wetteland's line-drive blast to left, scoring Kamryn Buffington, who preceded the homer with a sun-assisted double. Center fielder Cat Alston then made it 6-0 with her RBI triple in the sixth. Overall, the Thunder combined for 11 hits, with five going for extra bases.

St. Francis enters a bye week from SFL play, returning to non-league competition on April 19 for a Saturday doubleheader at River City. The Troubies face the host Raiders at 9:15 a.m., followed by a reunion with former Delta League foe Pleasant Grove at 11:30 a.m.
