Folsom claws back late on Troubies in softball return

SACRAMENTO, Calif. – Right fielder Claire Krotine, junior pitcher Reese Lewis and sophomore third baseman Jocelyn Villaflor each collected two hits but St. Francis saw an early lead slowly wither to a 5-3 loss to Folsom in a Sierra Foothill League softball game at Schuster Field Wednesday.

The Troubadours, playing their first game in almost two full weeks due to a pair of rain-postponed dates, dip to 1-6 for the season and begin SFL play at 0-1. The Bulldogs improve to 6-2-2 overall with a 1-0 SFL record.

Kinsley Imm, Marissa Jensen, Isabella Barge and Ariella Alcantar also had hits as St. Francis outhit its guest by a 10-7 margin. Lewis brought in Imm on an RBI single in the first for an initial 1-0 Troubie lead, then Barge led off the second with a double and scored in Alcantar's rip up the middle, doubling the margin to 2-0.

The Bulldogs got both runs back in their third, with junior Raygan Mercado highlighting the frame with an RBI double to center. But Troubie left fielder Kylee Garrett ran down a fly ball in foul territory to curb the rally. St. Francis later reclaimed the lead in the fourth: Villaflor led off with a base hit to center, moved up 60 feet on Krotine's bunt single, then came home on Imm's hit to center.

Unfortunately for SF, Folsom put up a tally in each of the fifth, sixth and seventh to pick up the win. Senior Brooke DiGiorno hit a solo shot in that fifth, but after Xavia Hodgins reached on a single and moved her way to third on a steal and a wild pitch, the Troubies limited the damage as Villaflor, Jensen and freshman catcher Olivia Meisner engaged in a 5-3-2 double play.

Still, a couple of wild pitches led to Folsom's go-ahead run in the sixth, then Folsom catcher Devyn Huber led off the seventh with another solo homer. Mercado then retired three Troubies in order to close out her complete game and win.

St. Francis returns to action in SFL road games at Whitney (March 26) and Del Oro (March 28) next week.
