Troubies trounce Falcons in Holy Diamond return

SACRAMENTO, Calif. – Sophomore first baseman Kaili Heeb hit 3-for-4 with a double, an RBI and three runs scored to lead St. Francis to a 9-2 victory over Christian Brothers in the "Holy Diamond" rivalry softball game Saturday afternoon.

The Troubadours snap an eight-game losing skid, improving to 2-10 for the year. The Falcons slip to 6-8 overall.

Heeb singled in the second and third innings, then banged out an RBI double in the fifth, all of which contributed to St. Francis' flipping a 1-0 deficit into an 8-1 lead. Left fielder Kylee Garrett finished 2-for-3 with a triple and two RBIs, with DP/pitcher Reese Lewis going 2-for-4 with an RBI double in the sixth.

Meanwhile, sophomore Kinsley Imm both started and finished the game in the pitching circle, totaling 4.2 inning with three hits, an unearned run and a strikeout. Lewis relieved Imm for the remaining 2.1 fames, allowing just one run.

Garrett's two-run triple scored Heeb and courtesy runner Ava Bernel, highlighting a three-run second inning. Garrett later scored on a fielder's choice to give SF a 3-1 edge. The Troubies continued to churn out runs in the third, with Lewis, Imm, Heeb and Garrett rapping out four straight hits and extending the lead to 6-1.

CB loaded the bases in the fourth to give itself a chance of narrowing the gap, only for Leavitt to snare a live drive off the bat of Taylor Jernigan to end the threat. St. Francis answered in its fifth, with Heeb's one-run double bumping the score to 7-1. Heeb later came home on Emma Fox's opposite field drive.

The Troubies tacked on one more run in the sixth: Leavitt led off by reaching on an error, then Lewis later brought her home with a double to left. The Falcons responded with a run in the bottom half, thanks to Josephine Eschelman's bases-loaded walk. An infield fly and a long fly out to Alexis McFarland in center stranded the three Falcons.

Saturday's contest marked the first Holy Diamond contest since March 7, 2022. The Troubies have won three straight in the rivalry by a combined 35-4: a 16-2 win in 2021, the 10-0 shutout in 2022, and the 9-2 victory on Saturday.

St. Francis returns to Sierra Foothill League action with home games against Granite Bay (Monday) and Rocklin (Wednesday) next week.
