Strong bats lead JV softball to fourth straight win
SACRAMENTO, Calif. – Taylor Trafican, Natalie Vigil and Sorina Pometta each collected three hits to lead St. Francis to a 20-4 win over River City in the junior varsity half of a non-league softball doubleheader Friday afternoon.

Meanwhile, seniors Kayla Garber, Hope Jenkins and Grace Jenkins each homered while Amy Abueg fired a four-hit complete game for the victory, as the Troubies topped the Raiders by an 11-1 final in six innings in the varsity game at Schuster Field. Both SFHS varsity and JV squads remain undefeated at 4-0.

On the varsity diamond, the third baseman Garber launched a two-run shot as part of a five-run first inning for the Troubies. Abueg, both Jenkins twins and second baseman Jazzy Basquez each singled as part of a three-run second, extending the lead to 8-0. Hope Jenkins delivered a solo homer in the fourth to cushion the margin to nine runs with one out in the fourth. Then with no outs and freshman Kylee Garrett aboard due to a walk, Grace Jenkins smacked a first-pitch homer to invoke the 10-run rule.

Meanwhile, Abueg – making her first starting appearance in the pitching circle – allowed four hits, with only a solo shot by River City second baseman Kayla Macias in the fifth preventing a shutout. Sophomore shortstop Francesca Guerrera also helped Abueg's cause with her defensive play in the second inning: she made a diving snare on Rayn Casassa line drive to the hole, then fired across the diamond to Alex Garcia to double up Mia Alejo.

In the JV win, Trafican hit 3-for-3 with a three-run homer in the third. Pometta also went 3-for-3 with a pair of walks with a triple. Second baseman Natalie Vigil also tripled for the second time in as many home games, finishing 3-for-4. Hailey Strange (2-for-5 with a triple), Riley Coauette (2-for-2, double) and Taylor Lewis (2-for-3) also had multiple hits.

Program newcomer Lauren Thomas, who was assigned her jersey this week, made her Troubie debut with a pinch-hit, two-run single in the fourth. Overall, St. Francis plated six runs in the first, seven in the third, then another seven in the fourth before the 10-run rule was invoked in the middle of the fifth.

St. Francis softball returns to action on Tuesday with a 4 p.m. doubleheader at Del Oro.
