Troubie duo earns Sac Bee All-Metro honors

SACRAMENTO, Calif. – St. Francis seniors Elizabeth Barger and Caitlin Hafenstein each earned third-team selections on the Sacramento Bee's inaugural All-Metro squad for flag football, the newspaper announced Wednesday.

Barger, the team's Defensive MVP, and Hafenstein, the Offensive MVP, helped the Troubadours to a 7-11 overall record and a fourth-place finish in the tough Sierra Foothill League. St. Francis also earned a berth in the Sac-Joaquin Section Division II tournament.

Barger, also an all-league soccer and lacrosse player at St. Francis, totaled 17 interceptions in her first and only flag football season last fall. Hafenstein, one of the soccer team's top scorers and arguably the track team's top sprinter last year, hauled in a team-best 13 touchdowns. In fact, Barger had two picks and Hafenstein scored two TD passes in the SJS playoff game at St. Mary's back on October 24.

The 2023 was the first official year for flag football across the CIF, with 66 teams in the section sponsoring the sport. The Bee sports staff also listed the Troubies at No. 9 on its final area rankings, compared to No. 11 on MaxPreps.
