Troubies honor seniors with shutout of Davis

SACRAMENTO, Calif. – Junior Reese Lieuwen intercepted two passes, senior Elizabeth Barger broke up four passes, while Tayli Paeu-Lindgren and Caitlin Hafenstein each opened series with long touchdown receptions, as St. Francis blanked Davis, 19-0, in Sierra Foothill League girls' flag football action Wednesday.

The win marked the first-ever shutout for the Troubadours, who close out the regular season with a 6-10 overall record and a 4-8 mark in the SFL. The Blue Devils fall to 7-10 for the year and 4-8 in league play. This moves the two teams into a fourth-place tie in the final standings, behind Del Oro (10-0), Rocklin (9-2) and Granite Bay (7-4). Whitney (3-8) could join Davis and SF in the event of an upset of DO Wednesday night.

Lieuwen posted her first pick on a third-and-long midway through the first half, then thwarted a fourth-and-goal situation at the 9:20 mark in the second half. Similar to her role in Tuesday's win over Folsom, Barger was charged with covering Davis' top target receiver, senior Anya DeJong. Barger broke up two passes in each half, earning the team's "Big Play" medallion after the game.

Offensively, senior quarterback Emma Karamanoukian completed 16 of 26 passes with three touchdowns and only one interception (oddly, by DeJong). Paeu-Lindgren was the first recipient of a TD strike. On St. Francis' second series of the game, she collected a screen along the right sideline, then added almost the entire 60 yards after catch to put her team on the board, 6-0, with less than 14 minutes to go in the first half.

Lieuwen's first interception gave SF possession just on the Davis side of the 40-yard line. In similar fashion to Paeu-Lindgren's score, Hafenstein pulled down a screen to the left side, then outraced the defense for approximately 35 yards to paydirt with 6:30 left in the first. Nevaeh Gavino made it 13-0 with her diving catch on the one-point conversion.

The Blue Devils went three-and-out for the fourth time in the first, opting to punt with 4:30 left before halftime. This began a three-minute scoring drive that included one reception by center Lauren Herbelin followed by three Hafenstein catches. The second such reception put SF on the Davis 8-yard line at the two-minute warning. Hafenstein then grabbed her second TD on a corner route, extending the lead to 19-0.

Davis used the final 1:48 to work its way to the red zone for the first time in the game, with DeJong and running back Andrea Gonzalez trading gains. Lieuwen pulled Amber Malik's flag on the first-and-goal play, keeping the Blue Devils off the board as time expired.

Neither team managed points in the second half. Reese had her second interception and Barger posted her final break on fourth-down conversion attempts. Freshman safety Charley Viley also came up with back-to-back PBUs, while pass rushers Alesandra Stahl and Colleen Medina took turns hurrying Davis quarterback Landry Clark. Sophomore Lauren Vicio also had a breakup in the first half while leading the Troubies with four deflaggings.

Wednesday's contest also served as the Homecoming game, resulting in an unusually large student, staff and faculty crowd; and Senior Day, with Barger, Hafenstein, Stahl, AJ Castellano, May Conlin, Sophia Fahey, Emma Karamanoukian, Eva Karamanoukian, Caroline Phillips and Natalie Vigil earning recognition prior to the game.

The wins against Folsom and Davis also strengthen St. Francis' chances for the Sac-Joaquin Section postseason. The top three teams from each of the nine leagues earn automatic entries into one of the two tournaments, leaving nine at-large spots available. Pairings and brackets will be announced on Friday. Playoff games run on Oct. 24 (first round), Oct. 26 (quarterfinals) and Nov. 1 (semifinals) at home sites, with the two championship games on November 4 at Cosumnes River College.
