SF draws Rams to launch inaugural SJS playoffs

SACRAMENTO, Calif. – St. Francis was awarded the 12th seed and will face fifth-seeded St. Mary's in the first round of the inaugural Sac-Joaquin Section Division II flag football playoffs, the governing body announced Friday. The game takes place at 7 p.m. on Tuesday at Sanguinetti Field in Stockton.

The Troubadours finished the regular season with resounding wins against Folsom (45-7) and Davis (19-0) to earn one of the remaining at-large berths in the bracket. The enter the playoffs with a 6-10 overall record. The Rams (13-3) earned an automatic qualifier into the postseason by virtue of a tie for second place in the Tri-City Athletic League. The top three teams in each of the nine SJS leagues received AQs.

St. Mary's is led offensively by freshman Geianna Gonzalez with 22 touchdowns, 21 of them in the air. She has 107 receptions for 1,546 yards in 19 games heading into the playoffs.

For St. Francis, senior Caitlin Hafenstein leads the way with 11 touchdowns while freshman Tayli Paeu-Lindgren has nine more TDs plus a pair of two-point conversions. Defensively, senior Elizabeth Barger has 12 interceptions on the season, including two-pick games against Folsom, Granite Bay and two against Rocklin.

Escalon (19-4) and Christian Brothers (13-3) claimed the top two seeds, respectively, in the Division II bracket. Meanwhile, undefeated Woodcreek holds the pole position in the D-I draw, with Sierra Foothill League champ Del Oro on the opposite end at No. 2.

The Sac-Joaquin Section announced the launch of girls' flag football as a new sport last spring, with almost 70 teams around the greater Sacramento and San Joaquin areas fielding teams in the first year. The Troubies are under the watch of head coach Melissa Triebwasser, with assistant coach Quincy Cooper and volunteer assistants Joe Poggi and Danny Soto.
