Swanson scores twice in loss to DO

SACRAMENTO, Calif. – Sophomore receiver Annie Swanson hauled in two touchdowns, senior Caitlin Hafenstein scored another and Tayli Paeu-Lindgren added a pair of two-point conversions, as St. Francis fell to Del Oro, 32-22, in Sierra Foothill League flag football action Tuesday afternoon.

The Troubadours slip to 1-4 for the season, 1-3 in SFL play. The Golden Eagles improve to 10-2 overall and remain unbeaten in league at 6-0.

Impressively, SF's 22 points exceeds the total of 20 DO had surrendered in league games prior to Tuesday's action. It is also the most points scored against the Eagles since Woodcreek defeated them, 25-6, back on August 26. Hafenstein notched the first such score with 5:45 left in the first. Paeu-Lindgren set up the play with her fourth-down conversion, then a penalty flag marched the Troubies closer to the goal line. SF quarterback Emma Karamanoukian then hit Hafenstein two plays later, cutting the DO lead to 13-6.

The Golden Eagles extended their lead to 20-6 when Samantha Pitzer scored with 25 seconds left. Pitzer added the conversion, then on the second play on the Troubies' final series of the half, she added a pick six, making it 26-6.

The Troubie defense largely held DO in check after the break, with a shovel pass to Chloe Champas accounting for the only Eagle points. Swanson posted her first touchdown on a fourth-and-goal, beating double coverage in the corner of the end zone at the 13:15 mark. Paeu-Lindgren then tacked on a two-point conversion, bringing SF to within a 26-14 deficit.

The Champas TD extended DO's lead to 32-14, but Abbey Pavelchik deflagged Bella von Seipler at the goal line to prevent the ensuing conversion. SF stalled at the DO 21-yard line on the following series.

With 1:08 left in the game, senior Elizabeth Barger picked off a pass from DO sophomore Lauren Snay at midfield, giving the Troubies one last chance to reduce the deficit. Karamanoukian hit Nevaeh Gavino for a 20-yard strike, then connected with twin sister Eva Karamanoukian for five more. Two players later, Emma delivered to Swanson with 13 ticks remaining, and Paeu-Lindgren added her second two-pointer.

DO ran one final play, a handoff to Kaiya Maggini, to run out the clock.

Besides her interception, Barger led the SF defense with two pass breakups, including one on a sliding play to thwart a 3rd-and-16 play by DO. Sophomore Lucia Vicio deflagged four Eagles to lead the Troubies in that category. Hafenstein's TD was the first of four total catches, including one leaping grab in front of the Golden Eagle bench that largely set the stage for the first Swanson score.

St. Francis heads to Rocklin twice this week, first for a regular SFL road game on Thursday, then as part of the Girls of the Gridiron tournament with the Troubie JV squad on Saturday.
