JV Red strikes early in 4-1 road win over Tigers

SACRAMENTO, Calif. – Mia Nelson assisted Kate Lewis in back-to-back goals as St. Francis' JV Red squad dispatched Inderkum by a 4-1 final in girls' prep soccer action at David Tooker Field Thursday afternoon.

The Troubadours improve to 5-2-2 for the season, extending their unbeaten streak to five straight contests.

Forward Holland Sperber assisted Penelope Cole in the 11th minute for St. Francis' first score, then after the Tigers equalized on a drive through the box in the 27th, Sperber scored a goal of her own for the go-ahead. Gianna Aragon set up the play with a free kick from midfield, then Audrey Deelstra redirected the ball to Sperber at the center of the box. Sperber's shot split two IHS defenders and zoomed past a third to lift the Troubies to the lead.

Lewis scored both goals from roughly the same spot on the field, finishing from the right side of the box after Nelson's cross-cage pass. The two scores came in the 35th and 43rd minutes, respectively, giving SF a 4-1 lead at the break.

The Troubies went to the second half with the wind at their backs and outshot their hosts, 8-0, but did not add to their lead.

Thursday's performance marks Lewis' second brace of the season, matching her output in the season opener against Rio Americano. Sperber raised her team-leading season totals to five goals and four assists for nine total points. Nelson now shares the JV Red assist lead with Sperber at four. Oddly, all four have taken place at Inderkum: one each again Del Campo and McClatchy at the Inderkum Invite in early December, plus the two in Thursday's win.

St. Francis JV Red turns around for a road game at Rocklin on Friday at 3:30 p.m. That same afternoon, the Troubadour varsity and JV Gold teams travel to Sheldon for Delta League road games at 3:30 p.m. and 5 p.m., respectively.
