JV Red strikes first but falls to Del Campo

SACRAMENTO, Calif. – Holland Sperber scored on an assist from Mia Nelson in the fourth minute of the contest, but St. Francis' Junior Varsity Red squad then surrendered four unanswered goals in falling to Del Campo, 4-1, in its lone Friday contest in the Inderkum Invitational JV bracket.

The JV Red evens its record to 1-1. Both Troubadour sub-varsity programs are in action at Inderkum, with JV Gold taking on varsity programs in the tourney's top draw.

Freshman midfielder Miley Blough scored braces in each of JV Gold's first-day wins in the varsity half of the tourney. She had the first two goals of a 4-1 win over Vacaville to start the day, then netted the first two scores to erase a 2-0 deficit in the Troubadours' 4-3 win over Pleasant Grove in the afternoon match. The SF Gold team opens the year at 2-0.

Sophomore Sofia Rabinovitz also scored a goal and assist in each contest. Angelina Chavez posted the fourth goal in the morning victory over the Bulldogs, and assisted two of the goals against the Eagles. Giuliana Del Guerra scored the game-winner over PG with three minutes remaining.

The Troubies drew first blood in the 18th minute when Rabinovitz sent a through ball up to Blough, who drove straight to the Vacaville cage before unloading her shot from about 15 yards out. Blough then made it 2-0 six minutes into the second half, stealing a goal kick some 45 yards out, centering herself between the two sets of football hashmarks, then launching a bomb out of the reach of the Bulldog keeper.

Camdyn Zucker and Jada Dwyre also posted assists versus the Bulldogs, setting up Rabinovitz in the 52nd and Chavez in the 58th, respectively.

Against PG, the Eagles took a 2-0 lead in the first 15 minutes of play, but Blough scored back-to-back to equalize. Rabinovitz hit the first go-ahead goal in the 53rd, only to have Pleasant Grove match it for a 3-3 tie. Del Guerra then hit the winner in the 57th.

The Troubadours' JV Gold team played in the varsity portion of the Inderkum tourney, while the mostly frosh JV Red had just the one Friday game in the jayvee half of the event. JV Gold will open Saturday's session against Grant Union at 8 a.m., then will finish the day in a placing game in the evening. JV Red has three contests on Saturday: Pleasant Grove at 8 a.m., McClatchy at 11:45 a.m. and an opponent yet to be determined at 3:30 p.m.

Meanwhile, the St. Francis varsity posted a tie against Ponderosa and a 5-1 win over Cordova in its action at the Rocklin Invitational. Coverage of that event can be found elsewhere at GoTroubies.com.
