JV falls early in loss at Davis

DAVIS, Calif. – Junior right fielder Claire Krotine hit 3-for-4 while sophomore center fielder Alexis McFarland finished 2-for-4, but two late rallies sank St. Francis in the sixth and eighth innings, as the Troubadours lost to Davis, 4-3, in the varsity end of a Delta League softball doubleheader in Community Park Wednesday.

The Troubies snap their winning streak at eight games, slipping to 8-2 for the season. The loss also ends a series winning streak with the Blue Devils at 10, as Davis had not beaten SF since a 7-0 shutout on April 27, 2017. Finally, this moves Davis into a tie for first with Sheldon at 2-0, with the Troubies now slipping a half-game back in the young league standings.

Kylee Garrett, Reese Lewis, Jaeya Leavitt and Kinsley Imm also had hits for St. Francis. McFarland nearly had a third hit but right fielder Kylie Yao chased down her barreled ball in the fourth.

The Blue Devils took an initial 1-0 lead in the opening frame, thanks to an RBI single from third baseman Sofia Lester. However, Imm tied the game on a double in the fourth, scoring Leavitt, then came around for the go-ahead run on an infield error. Davis got out of the jam, with Yao's catch on McFarland's ball figuring heavily in holding the Troubies to just two runs.

St. Francis extended its lead in the fifth, again capitalizing on costly Devil errors. Krotine led off with a first-pitch single, then moved up to second when an outfield throw-in sailed past the infielders. Two batters later, Krotine stole third, then raced home on the overthrow.

Davis stormed back with a two-out rally in the sixth, with two passed balls and a wild pitching helping the Blue Devil cause. Pitcher Kaytlin Lebar-Triepke also pulled a hard shot down the line that SF third baseman Alex Garcia nearly gloved. Garcia appeared to stop the ball to her right of the bag but her feet were ruled in fair territory, resulting in a single for the Davis freshman and extending the inning. Troubie reliever Kiley Shea fanned Beatrice Taormino for the third out, but not before a passed ball scored Cloe Lamoureux for the equalizer.

Neither team scored in the seventh, with Shea doing her part by striking out the side. The Troubies threatened in their eighth, thanks to a McFarland single and a Leavitt sacrifice. Davis intentionally walked Imm to set up additional force plays, but Lebar-Triepke ultimately coaxed a pop-up to get out of the inning.

Blue Devil second baseman Hannah Fox opened the bottom of the eighth with a double to left for her third hit. Naomi Kalanetra followed with a walk, then Lester loaded the bases with a bunt. Shea attempted to force out Fox at third but the Davis senior beat out the throw. Shea scored a key punchout against Isabel Chavez-Berman to hold the runners in place, but Lebar-Triepke ended up with the walk-off by punching a single to center to bring Fox in.

The St. Francis junior varsity squad fell by an 11-2 final, with Isabella Barge, Marissa Jensen and Ariella Alcantar each collecting hits. The Blue Devils stormed to a 9-0 lead through the first three innings, during which sophomore pitcher Briannah Licciani was perfect in the circle.

The Troubies broke up the shutout in the seventh. Freshman first baseman Jocelyn Villaflor reached on a walk, advanced to second on a passed ball, moved up to third on Emma Fox's ground out, then stole home during Jensen's at-bat. Jensen reached on an infield single, then came around to score on Barge's triple to left. Barge normally starts at second for the SF varsity but joined the JV squad for Wednesday's game to prevent a forfeit.

Fox finished the game hitting 3-for-4 with the two runs. Lebar-Triepke hit 2-for-4 while going the distance in the circle.

Both teams head south for the NorCal Leadoff Classic, albeit on different days. JV competes on Thursday and Friday, taking on Ceres, Oakdale, Turlock and Lincoln at the Tracy Sports Complex. Varsity takes part in bracket play on Friday and Saturday, opening with Notre Dame at 10 a.m. on Friday at The Ball Park.
