Swinging sticks propel Troubie JV past Capital Christian

SACRAMENTO, Calif. – Center fielder Marissa Jensen, second baseman Julia Nielsen and third baseman Emma Fox each collected three hits, with Nielsen and catcher Addison Hutchcraft driving in three apiece, as St. Francis junior varsity blasted Capital Christian by a 17-7 final in a rare JV-only softball game Tuesday.

The Troubadours improve to 3-1 for the season.

Nielsen also had the lone extra-base hit of the game, smashing a two-run double to left as part of a nine-run rally in the third inning. Arielle Alcantar went 2-for-2 with three runs scored and two RBIs, Hutchcraft and Haydyn Haecker finished 2-for-3 with walk and two runs each, with Gianna Barnes providing another 2-for-4 with a pair of RBIs. Lilian Desmond also contributed a two-run single in the third.

In all, St. Francis managed 18 hits in the contest, scoring five runs to lead off the game and two more in the second to craft a 7-0 lead. Haecker and Alcantar split the pitching duties, with Alcantar fanning five in her two-inning finish.

Besides the two pitchers, most of the Troubies got a chance to play other positions late in the game: With Alcantar vacating shortstop for the pitching circle, Nielsen took over at catcher, Hutchcraft got to play two innings at third, Fox slid over to short, and Barnes came in from right to play second.

St. Francis JV returns to action for a road game at Rosemont on Monday (3:30 p.m.) before returning home to host Del Campo the following day (4 p.m.). Both are JV-only dates, with varsity heading to St. Mary's on Wednesday before taking a break before a round-robin doubleheader at Vintage with Benicia on March 23.
