SACRAMENTO, Calif. – Junior Abbey Pavelchik and sophomore Alexa Randall each recorded interceptions, but St. Francis saw both of its red-zone opportunities turn into turnovers in a 28-0 loss to Del Oro in Sierra Foothill League flag football action Tuesday.
The Troubadours slip to 2-9 for the year and 1-4 in league play. The Golden Eagles remain unbeaten at 10-0 overall and 4-0 in SFL games, with six of their wins coming by margins of 20 or more points.
Pavelchik nabbed her pick on the first series of the game, picking off Delaney Osborne and returning to the SF 31-yard-line. Unfortunately, DO senior Payton Hyde intercepted right back on the very next play. Hyde later deflected a pass in the end zone that landed in the hands of teammate Caelyn Campos on a Troubie 2nd-and-goal opportunity. Randall had her INT early on the second half on a deep ball. The former SF tennis star returned the pick to midfield but most of the yards rolled back due to an illegal block.
Nonetheless, Randall's interception did not result in much of an opportunity for St. Francis, which went three and out on three incomplete passes on the next series.
Meanwhile, DO's Bella Von Seipler produced for the Eagles on both sides of the ball. She had two catches on her team's first touchdown, the first of which halted only due to Randall being the last line of defense. Von Seipler later caught a pass in the Troubie 1-yard line, setting up Sam Pitzer's touchdown.
However, Von Seipler's greater contributions came in the DO secondary. Her interception on the first series in the second half set up her team on the SF 23, which in turn led to another Pitzer TD to make it 21-0. Then with less than six minutes remaining in the game, and SF reaching the red zone on a pair of Nevaeh Gavino matches, Von Seipler intercepted a pass near her own goal-line and completed a full-field pick six at the 5:21 mark.
The Gavino receptions, among the team-leading eight for the game, marked the last time St. Francis advanced into DO territory until the game's final play, when freshman quarterback Lola Fox connected with sophomore running back Jade Abalateo with no time remaining.
The varsity loss followed a 13-6 setback for the St. Francis junior varsity. The Troubadours played well on both sides of the ball, with Mariko Palmeri collecting 10 receptions from quarterback Jocelyn Villaflor, with Madison Trafican putting SF on the board with her touchdown catch with 1:56 left in the game.
