Volleyball Sweeps Folsom to Reach SJS Semifinals

SACRAMENTO, Calif. – The St. Francis volleyball team overcame a 14-7 deficit in the third set to complete the 3-0 sweep of ninth-seeded Folsom on Thursday. The three-set (25-15, 25-14, 26-24) win puts the Troubadours in the Sac-Joaquin Section semifinals for the third consecutive season.

"It feels really great," said senior Kathryn Kramer. "I am excited to see what happens next week. We are prepared and have been working hard to get here."

St. Francis, the No. 1 overall seed, played solid over the first two sets, winning both to take a commanding lead.

"Our passing and cover was really good," said junior Alexa Edwards. "We had good passing and we could every option and out setters did a really good job choosing when to set each option."

Folsom, who upset No. 8 Modesto on Tuesday on the road, was not ready for their season to end. The Bulldogs won six of the first seven points in the third set and led 14-7 to force a Troubadour timeout.

Kramer came out and served the team back in the game, eventually tying the set at 14.

"I was focusing on my serves and I needed to do that for my team," said Kramer, who won 22 points on her serve in the match including seven straight in that stretch. "I think I did it perfectly."

Folsom fought back to win three points for an 18-15 advantage and had a set point. But the Troubies were not to be denied on this night, closing out the set 26-24.

"We played as a team," said Edwards of the comeback. "We were all kinda nervous and getting frantic. When we called our second timeout, we took a really deep breaths and let the negative energy go. We used it to motivate us because we really want a section championship."

St. Francis will host its semifinal match on Tuesday at 7 p.m. and will face No. 5 Pleasant Grove. The Eagles defeated No. 4 Pitman 3-1 on the road.

"I am really excited," said Kramer. I am glad we came back from the third set deficit and we won that game."
