Hall, Vrilakas, Quigley lead SF at sub-sections

ANGELS CAMP, Calif. – Sophomore Carly Hall, senior Remi Vrilakas and senior Paige Quigley led St. Francis in the Division II frosh-soph, junior varsity and varsity races, respectively, in Saturday's Sac-Joaquin Sub-Section cross country championship meet, hosted at the Calaveras County Fairgrounds – also known as "Frogtown."

All three Troubadour squads finished third in their respective races. The top 10 teams at the varsity level and top eight in the sub-varsity races advance to the CIF-SJS championships on November 12.

The SFHS fivesome of Paige Quigley, Daphne Witherell, Ryann Strawn, Grace Dunham and Kayla Towne finished as a pack within a quarter second of each other. Quigley, Dunham and Witherell effectively tied at 19 minutes, 2.7 seconds, followed by Towne at 19:02.8 and Strawn another tenth after that in 19:02.9. Emma Dobson and Kelsey Sutch later crossed together in 55th and 56th places. A total of 15 teams and 140 runners finished in the D-2 varsity race.

Hall finished ninth overall among the 13 teams and 156 runners in Saturday, crossing the line in 13:52.9. She was nearly a minute faster than her closest teammate, sophomore Chloe' Hickey, who placed 26th at 14:43.0. Mykaela Le (29th), Ashlyn Smith (34th) and Stella Davenport (35th) snared the third- through fifth-place scores for the Troubies, with Zoe Smith and Kyra Lueras displacing in 41st and 50th.

Vrilakas led four medalists (top 20) in the JV race, taking sixth at 20:23.5. Magdalena Becerril also finished in the top 10, outrunning a foursome of Davis entrants to pass through the chute in 20:46.6. Pamela Vargas followed in 15th, Amelia Bell in 18th, and Olivia Huerta in 23rd. Juniors Anita White (25th) and Chloe Rhodes-Nguyen (30th) represented St. Francis' No. 6 and No. 7 finishers to displace the scoring. Overall, the JV race had nine teams with 103 total runners.

The CIF-SJS championships take place at the Willow Hill Reservoir, adjacent to Folsom High School. The D-1/2 frosh-soph race goes off at 9:20 a.m., with the varsity girls at 11 a.m. The JV race, which combines all five divisions and runs almost concurrently with the boys' JV, is slated for 12:02 p.m.

The sub-section meet is also the last event that includes St. Francis' full squad, as only seven runners may compete at each level at the section championship. The top four teams in the varsity D-2 race at the section meet advance to state, while only three from D-3 and D-4 and two from D-1 and D-5 will move on.

St. Francis cross country has won a total of 12 Sac-Joaquin Section championships in its history: two in D-1, four in D-2 and six in D-3. The last such title was in 2019. The Troubies also have nine second-place showings at the meet, most recently in 2021. Three SF runners have earned four individual section crowns over the years: Kolleen Kassis (1987), Cybelle McFadden (1990, 1991) and Izzy Fauria (2018).
