Troubies win fifth straight Delta League cross title

Troubies win fifth straight Delta League cross title

ROCKLIN, Calif. – Senior Paige Quigley finished second overall in the girls' varsity 3-mile race with a time of 18 minutes, 26.3 seconds, while senior Daphne Witherell followed in third place at 18:39.6, leading St. Francis to its fifth consecutive team title at the Delta League Cross Country Championships at William Jessup Saturday.

Juniors Ryann Strawn and Kayla Towne placed sixth and eighth place to give the Troubadours four finishers among the top 10. The foursome of Quigley, Witherell, Strawn and Towne also earned All-Delta League patches by virtue of their top-12 overall placings.

Impressively, SFHS won the team title without regular high scorer Grace Dunham, who was absent due to illness. Emma Dobson took the No. 5 scoring spot with her 14th-place showing overall. Kelsey Sutch and Remi Vrilakas crossed the line as displacing finishers in 18th and 25th, overall.

The team championship represents the program's 23rd overall, a total that dates back to 1989 through memberships in the Delta River and Metro Leagues.

The varsity win followed an individual frosh-soph title for Troubie sophomore Carly Hall, who finished through the chute at 12:34.4 – just two tenths of a second ahead of Franklin's Lauren Braverman. Hall kept herself grouped among the front pack throughout the race, then she and Braverman separated during the final stretch for their race to the finish. Sam Powers (10th) and Chloe' Hickey (11th) nabbed the next two scoring finishes for the SF frosh-soph, followed by Ashlyn Smith in 18th and Stella Davenport in 21st.

The league championship also serves as a Senior Day meet for St. Francis, which honored 10 grads-to-be: Quigley, Witherell, Vrilakas, plus Sarah Charles, Sydney Eberhardt, Ava Ellis, Anna Harrison, Grace Himmelmann, Olivia Huerta and Kayla Hussey.

The Troubies return to action for their final full-program meet of the year, the Sac-Joaquin Subsection Championships at Frogtown in Angels Camp on November 5.
