Troubie JV finishes on high note at CKM Scramble

SACRAMENTO, Calif. – Sophomore Sara Ellis netted a team-leading four goals while Frannie Wells totaled six assists in an 11-1 win over Vintage, finishing St. Francis' day at the CKM JV Scramble girls' water polo tournament Saturday.

The Troubadours opened their day with an 8-4 loss to host McClatchy, then suffered a 7-6 heartbreaker at the hands of Oakmont before ending the schedule with the win over the Crushers. They move to 6-15 for the year with just three games left on the slate.

Other highlights belonged to Rose Haag, who posted her first hat trick; and Charlotte Krause, who made her debut at goalkeeper in place of year-long starter Jayel Miller. Krause finished with four saves with the one goal allowed in the nightcap with Vintage.

Haag, Wells, Ellis and Savannah Hamilton each netted one goal in the loss the CKM, with Ava Jack chipping in two assists. St. Francis trailed by a 5-1 margin at halftime but managed to play evenly with the hosts for the remainder of the game. Then Haag and Wells each had hat tricks in the setback against Oakmont, with Krause and Hamilton sharing the team lead with two assists apiece.

In the closer, Ellis had two assists and two steals to go with her team-high goals. Hamilton and Haag each added two tallies, while Jack, Wells and Erin Maeng each contributed another goal. Incredibly, St. Francis pulled off the win despite going short-handed for part of the game. With Della Smith unavailable due to injury, and Krause taking over in the cage, only six Troubies remained to play field positions: Haag, Jack, Maeng, Hamilton, Wells and Ellis. Haag eventually fouled out, leaving SF in permanent 5-on-6 mode.

The two water polo teams were split during this Saturday, with varsity winning the Gold bracket title on Day 2 of the Western States tourney in Modesto. Coverage of that event is available separately at GoTroubies.com.
