JV Troubies score two wins at Crusher Classic

NAPA, Calif. – Sophomore Sara Ellis totaled 13 goals in three games as St. Francis won two out of its three Friday games at the Crusher Classic junior varsity girls' water polo tournament, hosted by Vintage High School.

The Troubadours opened the day with a 12-7 loss to Redwood, then turned around to post a 14-8 victory over the tourney hosts followed by a 12-4 win against California. The SF jayvees move to 5-9 for the season.

Ellis scored a team-leading four goals in the opener versus the Giants, added a double hat trick against the Crushers, then finished the day with a third hat trick against the Grizzlies. Ellis now has 41 goals for the year, two ahead of Frannie Wells for the team lead. For her part, Wells netted five goals in each of the two wins.

The 14 goals against Vintage represents a season high for the Troubies. Wells and Ellis each added two assists in that game, while Charlotte Krause posted two goals and three assists.

Another highlight belonged to sophomore Rose Haag, who scored her first career goal in the morning contest with Redwood. Perhaps better known as an SF swimmer, Haag joined the water polo program shortly before the season started despite never having played the sport before.

Freshman goalkeeper Jayel Miller posted saves totals of 11 and 10 in the first two games. (No goalie stats were available from the California game.)

Oddly, St. Francis ended up in a Saturday pool with one of its two Delta League opponents. The Troubies will open the day at 8:45 a.m. against Davis, which split its Friday morning round robin with Campolindo and St. Ignatius before edging McClatchy in the first round of reseeded play in the afternoon.

SF and CKM will then square off for the penultimate game of Saturday's schedule. That game is listed at 11:45 a.m. The Lions lost a 12-9 battle to Rio Americano, nipped Lodi by a 6-5 score, then fell to Davis, 9-8.
