DAVIS, Calif. – Ava Stimson, Gauri Mathrakott and Miranda Ferguson each netted goals but St. Francis found itself on the losing end of a 14-3 contest in a Delta League and regular-season girls' water polo finale against Davis at UC Davis' Schaal Aquatics Center Tuesday night.
The varsity matchup, part of a doubleheader with Jesuit, followed a 12-0 junior varsity loss to the Blue Devils. The JV doubleheader (also with Jesuit) took place in West Davis at Arroyo Park.
Mathrakott scored her goal with 1:29 left in the first, drawing an exclusion then converting the power play on an assist from Abigail Benavidez. That interrupted a run of three unanswered Davis goals to start the game, but the Blue Devils pulled ahead to 5-1 before the Troubadours could alter their side of the scoreboard again. That score also came on a 6-on-5: Mathrakott drew another kickout, and Stimson scored on an LK Holliday assist with 3:22 to go.
Davis extended its lead to 8-2 at the halftime break, and 12-2 through three. St. Francis shot 0-for-5 and committed six turnovers in that third frame, finally breaking the scoreless spell with 1:05 left in the contest. Holliday earned a steal, the Troubies called timeout, then Piper Brostrom assisted Ferguson for the score.
Malaya Wright and Kenzie Walker each scored double hat tricks to lead Davis, which shot .609 (14-for-23) to its guest's .176 (3-for-17).
No individual statistics were kept for the JV game. The Troubie jayvees finish their regular season with an 11-11 record. The varsity moves to 10-10, but the second-place finish in the Delta League ensures a spot in the Sac-Joaquin Section tournament, which begins on Thursday, Nov. 3. Mary Margaret Ferrara, Havana Sperber, and Addison Hutchcraft will join the varsity squad for the postseason.
