McFarland, Basquez named to Optimist All-Stars

SACRAMENTO, Calif. – Outfielder Olivia McFarland and infielder Jazzy Basquez each earned spots on the South squad in the Sacramento Breakfast Optimist Senior All-Star Softball Game, held at Capital Christian on Wednesday, June 7. The Small School game starts at 5:30, while the Large School contest – which includes St. Francis – begins on the varsity field at 6:30 p.m.

The UC Davis-bound McFarland finished her final season with a .263/.317/.578 batting line, with the slugging average bolstered by three homers down the stretch of the season – her first as a varsity Troubadour. She also scored 11 runs and drove in 11 more in just 17 games played. Basquez, who will play at Folsom Lake College next year, hit .386/.476/.457 for the year with nine runs and 13 RBIs. The two seniors helped St. Francis to a 16-13 overall record, an 8-4 mark in the tough Delta League, and a quarterfinal berth in the Sac-Joaquin Section Division II playoffs.

Basquez and McFarland are two of 20 players on the South team in the large-school game. The Delta League is particularly well-represented on the South roster: two players from Franklin, two from Franklin, three from Sheldon and three from league champ Pleasant Grove. The South team also features seniors from Christian Brothers, Ponderosa, River City, Vacaville and Vista Del Lago. Folsom's Sheena Jackson serves as head coach, with assistants Mary Jo Truesdale (Sheldon), Reina Andreatta (Folsom) and Forest Martin (Folsom).

The North team has 23 players plus four alternates, pulling from Antelope, Del Oro, Granite Bay, Inderkum, Lincoln, Oakmont, Rio Americano, Rocklin, Roseville, West Park, Whitney and Woodcreek. Granite Bay's Brian Seva serves as North head coach, with Greg Doyle (GB) and Abi Lund (Lincoln) joining as assistants.

Tickets are available at the door only. Prices are $10 for adults, $8 for senior citizens, $5 for students and $3 for children under 12. All proceeds support the Breakfast Optimist club's educational programs.
