Softball drops road doubleheader at PG

ELK GROVE, Calif. – Junior first baseman Hailey Strange hit 2-for-3 while Francesca Guerrera and Claire Krotine also knocked out hits, but St. Francis did not advance a runner behind second base in falling to Pleasant Grove, 10-0, in the varsity end of a Delta League softball doubleheader Friday afternoon.

In fact, both Troubadour teams lost in similar fashion: falling to a quick deficit in the first two innings then having the 10-run rule invoked in the bottom of the sixth. The St. Francis junior varsity fell by a 14-4 final on the opposite field.

The Troubie varsity managed to put runners in scoring position in each of the second, third and fourth innings, each time via a sacrifice bunt. Strange led off the second with a single to the right side, then moved up 60 feet on Kylee Garrett's bunt. But PG sophomore pitcher Madeline Lawson ultimately escaped by striking out back-to-back SF batters.

In the third, Guerrera poked a single to center, then advanced on a Krotine sacrifice. Again, Lawson answered, coaxing a comebacker to finish the frame. Then in the fourth, it was Strange with another leadoff single, and Garrett moving her up with her second sacrifice hit. Lawson escaped yet again with no further damage as part of her four-hit shutout.

St. Francis also committed three errors in the contest, falling into a 2-0 hole after the first inning and a 4-0 deficit by the second. Lawson helped herself out by leading off the sixth with a double, igniting a five-run rally that concluded with Zoe Iverson's walk-off grand slam.

Meanwhile, the Troubie JV trailed 6-1 after two innings before cutting into the lead on a two-run single from Emma Fox in the top of the third. Addison Hutchcraft helped reduce the lead to 6-4 on her second hit and second RBI, scoring Layla Werner with no outs in the sixth. Eagle sophomore Ava Goodpasture struck out the next two Troubies, then yielded a base hit from Jaeya Leavitt with Hutchcraft on second. The Troubie first baseman attempted to score from second but was gunned down at the plate.

St. Francis allowed four hits and committed two errors as PG put up eight runs in its half of the sixth. Junior third baseman Shelby Stephan delivered the walkoff single to plate the 14th run.

St. Francis varsity moves to 8-9 for the year and 4-3 in Delta League play. The jayvees drop to 8-4-1 overall with a 3-2-1 mark in league. Both teams return to action on Wednesday by hosting Elk Grove. First pitch is 4 p.m. at each diamond.
