ELK GROVE, Calif. – Junior Kiley Shea fired her first no-hitter as a Troubadour, sophomores Kylee Garrett and Claire Krotine each hit triples, and junior Francesca Guerrera drove in three runs as St. Francis rolled past Cosumnes Oaks, 11-1, in the varsity end of a Delta League softball doubleheader Wednesday afternoon.
The Troubadours have now won four straight, improving to 4-6 overall and 3-1 in league play. The SF junior varsity also dominated, scoring 25 runs in the first two frames en route to a 30-4 final in four total innings.
Shea made her third start since becoming activated from her mandatory sit-out period due to her transfer. She fanned eight CO batters and walked just two, allowing just one unearned run in the sixth.
Meanwhile, the Troubies enjoyed a steady stream of offense from start to finish, amassing 14 hits and getting a boost from seven Wolfpack errors. Garrett hit 2-for-5 with an RBI triple in the second. Guerrera also went 2-for-5, bringing in Garrett on a fielder's choice in that second inning, then driving in two more tallies with a rip through the middle in the fifth, extending the SF lead to 6-0.
Four more runs came across in the seventh, with Natalie Vigil, Guerrera, Jazzy Basquez, Isabella Barge and Alexis McFarland each earning hits as part of that rally. Shea retired the side in order for the bottom half of the seventh, coaxing two fly balls to center fielder Sorina Pometta and striking out Kylah Avila in the process.
Kasey McAtee, another recently activated transfer, drove in two runs without a hit. After entering as a defensive sub for first baseman Isabella Vela, she came up with bases loaded in each of the sixth and seventh innings. Both times, she bounced out but brought in another run for SF.
Meanwhile, the Troubie JV piled up 18 hits and capitalized on nine CO errors en route to its 30 runs. Left fielder Layla Werner hit 3-for-5 with five RBIs and Julia Nielsen was 3-for-4 with four RBIs – oddly, in the 8-9 part of the lineup. First baseman Taylor Lewis also had three hits with a pair of teammates driven home.
Sixteen of the St. Francis hits were singles, with doubles by Werner (first) and Marissa Jensen (second) extending beyond 60 feet. One of the more unusual boxscore lines belonged to second baseman Emma Fox: 2-for-4 with five runs scored. She reached on two singles, plus once on a fielder's choice, another time on a hit by pitch, and yet again on an error; then managed to score on each trip to the basepaths.
Fox, Jensen and Gianna Palermo each finished with two hits. Jaeya Leavitt, Addison Hutchcraft and Rylee Coauette each singled to account for the balance of the 18-hit output.
In the pitching circle, Coauette fired three innings with just one hit, one earned run and one walk allowed. She also struck out four before Deanna Richardson took over in the fourth.
Both St. Francis teams head 75 miles south to Tracy to take part in the NFCA NorCal Leadoff Classic (norcalclassic.weebly.com) on Thursday and Friday. The varsity competes in the Platinum division and opens tournament play against Gregori at 11 a.m. The Troubie jayvees will play a two-day round robin at Kimball High, with games against Escalon (9:30 a.m.) and Ceres (11 a.m.) on Thursday followed by Orestimba (12:30 p.m.) and Los Banos (3:30) on Friday.
