STOCKTON, Calif. – St. Francis swept Archbishop Mitty by scores of 25-17, 25-15 in the third-place match of the Bear Creek site of the 16th Stockton JV Classic volleyball tournament Saturday.
The Troubadours beat both of their round-robin opponents earlier in the day, finishing strong with a 32-30, 25-11 win over Redwood then following with a 25-17, 25-19 victory against Sacred Heart Cathedral. This put SF in a tough bracket with Saint Francis of Mountain View, Mitty and Sierra Foothill League rival Oak Ridge.
The Troubies fell to Saint Francis, 25-21, 25-22, to move to the 'A' bracket's third-place match against Mitty.
For reference on the scope of the four opponents, the varsity version of Archbishop Mitty defeated SFHS in last year's CIF NorCal Regional Open Division before falling to a "Monarchs vs. Monarchs" state championship against Mater Dei. Sacred Heart Cathedral feeds into a varsity program that finished as the state Division II runner-up last November. Finally, Redwood's varsity rose from a No. 7 seed in the Central Section to a No. 2 seed in the Southern California Region Division III championships, and advanced to the state final before losing in a massive upset to Ripon Christian.
Impressively, the Troubies' loss to the Lancers snapped a 15-match winning streak to start the year. St. Francis now sits at 16-1.
All three Troubadour squads resume SFL play at Del Oro on Monday. Match times are 4:30 (frosh), 5:30 (JV) and 6:30 p.m. (varsity).
