EL DORADO HILLS, Calif. – Sophomore Hailey Sutton posted a double-double of 10 kills and 10 digs but St. Francis fell in straight sets, 25-16, 25-22, 25-20, to Oak Ridge in the varsity finale of a Sierra Foothill League girls' volleyball tripleheader Monday night.
The Troubadours drop to 21-12 for the year and dip below .500 in league at 6-7. The Trojans jump to 22-13 overall and improve to 9-4 in SFL play. The loss also marks the eighth straight for St. Francis in the head-to-head series with Oak Ridge – a rivalry that includes five Sac-Joaquin Section championship matches.
The Troubies led early in each of the first and second sets, including a 4-1 start to the first. A Palmeri tool lifted SF to a 5-4 edge in the opener, but Oak Ridge scored seven of the next eight to establish an 11-6 edge. The Trojans maintained at least a four-point margin over their guests, with former Troubie Sophia Van Ness scoring two kills down the finish en route to the 25-16 win.
Five early kills from Sutton then helped St. Francis lead for most of the second set, with her fifth of the frame giving the Troubies a 19-16 advantage. Then the Trojans followed with four straight, including a block by middle Kaya Charles and setter Avery Towne, flipping the score back in their favor. Kills from Gabrielle Rowe and Layla Alexander later restored the SF lead at 22-21, but OR responded with another 4-0 run. Riley Elliott's monstrous four provided the 24-21 set point, with Towne's ace finishing the job.
St. Francis hit a solid .280 (11-4-25) in the second in contrast to the .000 (5-5-21) in the first. However, the scoring edge remained with the Trojans throughout the third. The Troubies enjoyed a glimmer of hope when Isabella Ramos' ace highlighted a 5-0 run to close the gap from 18-10 to 18-15, then setter Sydney Chow dumped the ball into some open court to narrow the deficit to 20-17. Sophia Palmeri also kept SF within three points with her tip at 23-20. Still, Oak Ridge managed to finish the job: senior middle Camryn Reiser put down a kill, then consecutive Trojan zero blocks eventually led to a Troubie attacking error for the 25th.
Prior to the varsity match, both St. Francis junior varsity and frosh scored wins over their Trojan counterparts, although via different paths. The Troubie frosh won two close sets, 25-23, 28-26, for a sweep in the auxilary gym. Meanwhile next door, the SF junior varsity went the distance for a 26-28, 26-21, 17-15 win in Trojan Arena. The jayvees actually stood on the brink of a loss, surrendering five unanswered points to erase a 13-8 lead, then falling to a 14-15 match point. However, Alli MacDonald and Sidney Palmeri scored kills and Joie Dickerson served up an ace in a 3-0 Troubie finish to the rubber set.
All three teams return to action for the regular-season finale against Davis on Wednesday night. The 10 Troubie senior players plus manager Copeland Williams will be honored prior to the varsity match. Additionally, any participants in the October 12 St. Francis PAL tournament will be admitted free if they wear their team jerseys to the match.
Frosh begins at 4:30, with JV scheduled for 5:30 and varsity at 6:30 p.m.
