CLOVIS, Calif. – St. Francis senior Paige Vicente compiled an eight-dive total of 281.45 points, advancing to the semifinal round and finishing 20th on the 1-meter board on the first day of the CIF state swimming & diving championships, hosted at the Clovis West Aquatics Complex Thursday.
The UC Santa Cruz-bound diver qualified for the meet by finishing third in the Sac-Joaquin Section championship. Each diver in the overall field competes in five dives, then is reduced to 22 participants in the three-dive semifinal. Finally, the top 18 advance to the final to complete a full 11-dive championship program.
Vicente scored 39.00 points on her 203C, or back 1.5 somersault tuck, in the second round to move as high as 14th place. She ultimately settled into 21st place to nab one of the final spots in the semifinal. Vicente bounced back from a disappointing 28.05 in the fifth round to notch 40.95 on a 303C (reverse 1.5 tuck), then followed with a solid 35.70 on a 103B (forward 1.5 pike). Unfortunately, her total trailed the bubbled by 18 points, ending her season after the semis.
Long Beach Poly's Elonia Feliciti Lobedecis, the Southern Section runner-up, won the overall state title at 505.35. Vicente's fellow SJS peer Keira Chandler of Mountain House placed second at 470.25, with San Dimas sophomore Jacqueline Chen winning a tight race for third at 459.90.
The state swimming & diving championships span three days. The boys' and girls' diving competitions ran on Thursday morning and evening, respectively, while the swimming trials and finals take place on Friday and Saturday.
