ROCKLIN, Calif. – Freshman Piper Bates amassed 315.65 points to finish fourth on the girls' varsity 1-meter diving board at the Sierra Foothill League diving championships, held at Whitney High School Tuesday afternoon. Freshman Stella Cassidy followed two places back in sixth at 310.05, senior Maya Hamilton placed seventh (293.00) and sophomore Rose Buffleben took eighth (269.96) as the remaining Troubadours in the varsity competition.
Oak Ridge's Mimi Poort easily won the meet with a 449.15 total, with Folsom's Naomi Anderson (362.55) and Davis' Violet Watts (356.95) comfortably in second and third, respectively.
Bates scored 30 or more points on four of her 11 dives, including 36.30 on her 403C, or inward 1.5 somersaults tuck, in the fourth round. Cassidy rallied later in the meet, also peaking on a 403C with an identical 36.30-point bump in the seventh round
In contrast, Hamilton led the Troubies early on, posting such scores as 34.85 (103B), 36.30 (104C) and 34.10 (403C) in her first, second and fourth dives. Buffleben also enjoyed her best dive early in the meet, scoring 35.20 tallies on a 104C (forward 2.0 somersaults tuck) in the second round.
The varsity finishes count in the overall team scoring toward this weekend's SFL swim championships, held at Granite Bay High on Thursday through Saturday.
Earlier in the day, freshman Alex Suter and junior Hana Beauchamp finished first and second, respectively, among a field of five entrants in the junior varsity competition. Suter posted a 242.85, saving her best for her 11th and final dive: a 30.40 on her 5222D (backward somersault with a twist). Beauchamp scored 203.35 to stay just ahead of Oak Ridge's Rachel Bills (202.50). Like Suter, Beauchamp posted her highest score in the final round, amassing 32.20 points on a 5223D, or backward somersault with 1.5 twists.
St. Francis takes a week off from competition, hosting a team "game day" with recognition of seniors Hamilton and Paige Vicente, plus the annual Letters to Loved Ones event on Monday. The Troubies return to action on May 5 for the Sac-Joaquin Section championships, held at St. Mary's High's Cortopassi Aquatics Center.
