JV Gold drops season finale despite outshooting hosts

DAVIS, Calif. – St. Francis managed just six shots while surrendering a goal in each half in falling to Davis, 2-0, in the Delta League girls' soccer season finale at Ron & Mary Brown Stadium Monday night.

The loss dropped the Troubadours to 16-4-3 overall and 9-2-1 in league play, the latter resulting in a third-place finish of 28 total points. The Blue Devils improved their Delta League mark to 9-1-2 for 29 points, while Franklin blanked Sheldon on Monday to claim the championship at 10-2 (30 points).

Of the six SF shots, exactly half were on goal: a Miley Blough attempt in the 19th minute, a Yasmin Azar shot in the 59th following an outlet pass from Tacori Abril, then another try by Mia Barsotti in the 74th. Davis senior Grace Fabionar put her team on the board in the 12th minute, then Miya Alamares launched a long kick from almost midfield in the wake of a Troubie yellow card.

Both Troubie junior varsity teams fell by 1-0 shutouts in their respective games. JV Gold enjoyed a 16-6 shooting advantage in its loss, including an 8-1 edge in the first half, but could not find the back of the net. Blue Devil freshman Ariana Corona nearly broke up the scoreless tie in the 48th when Ariana Corona managed to unload a pair of shots. Charlotte Lippi blocked the first, while the second sailed wide. Instead, it was Donica Cisco who delivered for the host.

In the JV Red finale, the two teams combined for just two shots in the first 54 minutes until freshman Margot Lubell redirected a cross from the right flank to put Davis up, 1-0. Lubell nearly had a second goal four minutes later, but missed a chance at an otherwise unguarded net. Similarly, SF sophomore Evelyn McNearney had a look at the Davis goal in the final minute when the offense drew the keeper out. But credit the backline for corralling McNearney's shot before it could reach the goal.

JV Gold finishes its season at 18-2-2 overall and 8-2-2 in Delta League games. JV Red closes the year with a 5-13-2 mark.

St. Francis varsity will learn its fate in the Sac-Joaquin Section postseason, which begins this Saturday. Pairings, dates and times will be announced at the CIF-SJS website (cifsjs.org) on Wednesday. The Delta League champion automatically earns a spot in the Div. I bracket, while four other member teams are granted at-large spots. St. Francis will be assigned to D-II.
