Squaglia leads charge in 8-0 shutout at CO

ELK GROVE, Calif. – Senior Caitlin Hafenstein assisted on her team's first two goals then scored one of her own in the 72nd minute, leading St. Francis to a 4-0 win over Cosumnes Oaks in the varsity nightcap of a Delta League girls' soccer doubleheader Wednesday night.

The Troubadours improve to 9-3-1 overall and 2-1 in league play, extending their undefeated streak to five games.

The SF varsity win followed a 8-0 shutout by JV Gold, in which sophomore Madeline Squaglia posted two goals and two assists. Meanwhile, JV Red lost a 4-1 tilt at Ponderosa JV, with Eliza Hurley scoring the lone Troubie goal.

Hafenstein sent a cross to Jada Dwyre in the 21st minute of the game to break the scoreless tie, then her shot set the stage for a Giuliana Del Guerra putback in the 39th, giving SF a 2-0 halftime lead. Junior Sofia Rabinovitz made it 3-0 in the 53rd with her slide tackle shot, then Hafenstein tacked on her sixth goal of the season in the 73rd to set the board at 4-0.

Hafenstein's raised her season totals to six goals and three assists for 15 points. Senior Yasmin Azar, who assisted Rabinovitz' goal, leads the Troubies overall with a 6-4-16 scoring chart, while Dwyre ranks third on the team with her 3-6-12 totals.

Squaglia figured on half of her team's goals in the opener at CO, scoring two and assisting on two others. Freshman Norah White and sophomore Holland Sperber also supplied braces, with Mia Nelson and Lacey Harmon accounting for the remaining scores. Ryleigh Czerniec and Marissa Ow earned assists for Gold, which remains undefeated for the year at 10-0-2.

Sperber raised her team-leading season totals to 12 goals and 27 points. Squaglia now has totals of 7-7-21, with White in third at six goals and three assists (15 points).

Meanwhile in the Mother Lode area, the all frosh-soph JV Gold fell to Pondo's JV squad. The Bruins crafted a 3-0 lead at halftime and tacked on a fourth goal with less than eight minutes left, but not before Hurley banged in a header off a corner kick from Liv Vasques-Martin in the 47th minute. That's the fifth assist on the year for Vasques-Martin while Hurley earned her first goal since finding the back of the net twice at Will C. Wood back on November 29.

St. Francis varsity and JV return home to host Sheldon for continued Delta League play on Friday. Game times are 4 and 6 p.m. at Cristo Rey High. The Troubies' JV Red squad has a week before hosting Wood on January 10, also at CRHSS' Adamson Family Sports Complex.
