Troubie soccer kicks off new year on winning note

ELK GROVE, Calif. – Sophomore forward Mia Barsotti scored twice while Yasmine Azar and Estelle Bacsafra added one goal each to lead St. Francis' JV Gold team to a 4-0 win over Elk Grove in Delta League girls' junior varsity soccer action Tuesday night.

The Troubies stay undefeated at 8-0-2 for the year.

St. Francis held a 1-0 halftime lead on the Herd, who opted to stack the field with defenders. Head coach Alex Hoang adjusted to the strategy after the break, and his team answered with three second-half scores. Overall, the Gold Troubies outshot their hosts by a whopping 39-0 margin.

Earlier in the evening, the Troubadour varsity squad claimed a 1-0 shutout over Elk Grove to improve to 8-2-2 overall and 2-0-0 in Delta League play. Junior midfielder Micaela Romo scored the lone goal off a corner kick to lead SFHS in its return to action in the new calendar year.  Romo, who matched teammates Jaycee DeFazio and Brooke Castro with three shots, netted her game-winner in the 16th minute of play. This marks the team-leading 10th goal for the season.

All three of the Troubadours' soccer teams won by shutout, with JV Red defeating Ponderosa, 1-0, back in Sacramento at Cristo Rey High. Sofia Rabinovitz converted an assist from Abby Clark in the 36th minute to put SFHS on the board, then Olivia Hamm walked up an buried a shot five minutes into the second half for the game's second score.

The SFHS varsity and JV Gold teams return to Cristo Rey to host Davis on Thursday at 4 and 6 p.m. The JV Red will host Oak Ridge on its campus field at 3:30 that afternoon.
