Azar scores six goals on first day of Inderkum tourney

SACRAMENTO, Calif. – Sophomore striker Yasmin Azar scored four goals in an 11-0 win over Natomas High, then netted both scores in a 2-2 draw with McClatchy to lead the St. Francis junior varsity Gold squad on the first day of the Inderkum High girls' soccer tournament Friday.

Both the Nighthawks and Lions fielded varsity squads against the Troubadours' jayvees, which improve to 7-0-1 for the year.

In addition to Azar's four goals, Kyah Pickett and Mia Barsotti each posted braces while Caitlin Hafenstein, Becca Weil and Tacori Abril added one goal apiece.

Against McClatchy, Azar collected a pass from Hafenstein at the top of the penalty box and advanced the rest of the way in to put the Troubies on the board in the ninth minute. St. Francis managed additional shots in the first half, but one caromed off the frame while the Lions' keeper made stops.

However, McClatchy scored goals in the 39th and 51st minutes to claim a lead and threaten to hand the Troubies their first loss. However, with a minute remaining, Weil collected a ball at midfield and played it up to Azar, who advanced straight on frame before sending in the equalizer.

The JV Gold will resume tournament play at 8 a.m. against Chico High on Saturday morning. Check back to GoTroubies.com for updates on JV Red and varsity, both of which also opened tourneys on Friday.
