Strong DO finishes sink Troubie hoop

LOOMIS, Calif. – Second-half Del Oro offensive outbursts sank St. Francis in each end of a Sierra Foothill League girls' basketball doubleheader at Bonner Gym Monday night. The varsity surrendered 37 points after the break to fall, 60-31, in the nightcap; while the Troubadours' junior varsity gave up 30 unanswered down the stretch in its 65-19 setback.

The SF varsity drops its fourth straight contest to slip to 6-8 overall and 0-1 in SFL play. The jayvees move to 5-8 and 0-1, respectively.

Senior Sydney Teoh shot 6-for-13 from the floor for 13 points while sophomore post Tayli Paeu-Lindgren finished with seven points and nine rebounds. Junior Lexi London drained a pair of three-pointers as part of her nine points. However, the Troubies hit just 13 of 36 overall for a 36.1 percent clip, with a 3-for-14 output (.214) from beyond the arc.

Despite the final score, the varsity game proved to be a see-saw battle in the first half, with the two teams for four ties and three lead changes en route to a 23-23 deadlock at the break. London popped two treys while Teoh buried another as part of a 9-3 SF start, although DO senior Bella Von Seipler eventually scored back-to-back to give her team its first lead of 15-13 at the 43-second mark in the first.

The Troubies regained the lead midway through the second period as a Natalia Zitelli steal in the paint followed by an Annie Swanson offensive board set the stage for London's successful drive, lifting SF up by a 22-21 margin with 3:54 to go. Von Seipler answered with a shot in traffic later in the frame, but Paeu-Lindgren drew a foul on a defensive rebound, then proceeded to hit the front end of the bonus trip to the foul line, evening the proceedings at 23-23.

Unfortunately for St. Francis, the second half turned into a Von Seipler showcase. She scored 12 of her 28 total points within a span of 2:43 in the third, including a three-point desperation shot from the Golden Eagle logo at center court. The heave rattled in as the shot clock expired, pushing the DO lead to 37-27. The Eagles extended their lead to 42-29 heading into the fourth, then Von Seipler assisted four three-pointers in the fourth: two by junior Alyena Estrada from the left side, then two by junior Aubrey Romani from the right side.

The Troubies managed just four buckets in the second half, with three coming from Paeu-Lindgren: a reverse layup from Laila Mendoza early in the third period, a feed from Teoh with 1:46 to go in that stanza, then a bump and run for the lone SF score in the fourth.

Earlier in the night, Emmy Cheatham scored a team-high eight points while Jocelyn Dickinson and Catherine Gustafson each delivered two more field goals, but the SF jayvees trailed wire-to-wire in the opener of Monday's set. Gustafson also led her team with 10 rebounds, two of which led to putback goals in the first half.

Cheatham scored on the opening possession then assisted Dickinson in transition to start the second half. Dickinson later added a three-point play, finishing down low, drawing the foul and hitting the bonus free throw. That closed the halftime gap to 31-17, the smallest deficit since the end of the first period. However, the Golden Eagles responded with a 34-2 finish to the game, with Cheatham's runner off the glass midway through the third serving as the lone Troubie scoring.

Monday's doubleheader kicked off the first season in the SFL for St. Francis, which previously competed in the Delta, Delta River and Metro leagues. Both teams return home to host Granite Bay on Wednesday. JV tips off at 6 p.m. with varsity scheduled for 7:30.
