Track and Field Opens Stanford Invite with Three Events

PALO ALTO, Calif. – The St. Francis distance crew posted an attack on the school record book with three top-10 performances in the 3200 meters and Distance Medley Relay at the first day of the Stanford Invitational.

"They came in pretty determined," said Distance coach Aaron Rios. "This is one of three big meets for them. THey had goals to come out here and have fun."

The DMR won the Stanford Invitational title in 12:21.47, the third-best performance in the event in school history. It was behind only school record from 2017 set at Stanford run by DeBenedetti, Kathryn Kramer, Noel Lynch and Sydney Vandegrift.

DeBenedetti led off for the Troubadours on Friday, taking over the lead on her third lap of her 1200 meter leg.

"My race went the way I wanted it to," said DeBendetti. "I knew I had to get out there and put myself in the best position I could."

She handed off to freshman Alexys Jones, who ran the 400 leg, before handing to junior Emma Hollenbach, who kept the team in the top three after two laps around the Angell Stadium track.

Junior Isabel Fauria took the final four laps with her 1600, eventually taking over the lead on the third lap and running the team to victory.

"It felt really amazing," said Fauria. "I am so grateful for my team and every single time we run the DMR. We want to put our best foot forward and we have done that both times.

In the first event for the team earlier in the day, freshmen Cate Joaquin was third and Tatiana Cornejo was eighth in the 3200 meters. Both ran personal-bests and moved into the school's all-time top 10 performance list.

"I was feeling really good today and the weather was really nice," said Joaquin, who moved up to fourth on the all-time performance list with her 10:47.79. "Having teammate in the race helped me feel more comfortable."

Joaquin now trails only Lauren LaRocco, Peyton Bilo and Sydney Vandegrift on the all-time list. The Troubadours were the only team to have two runners in the 3200 final.

Cornejo finished eighth overall in 11:08.76, smashing her personal best by 18 seconds. She is now eighth on the all-time list.

"Slowly through the season I keep dropping (my time)," said Cornejo. "So I feel good about my performance."

Senior Izzy Grassel also competed in the long jump. Results will be posted later tonight.

The team will be represented in seven events on Saturday starting with the high jump at 8:30 a.m. and ending with the 4x400m relay at 3:30 p.m.
