Junior varsity wraps successful weekend at Rio tourney

SACRAMENTO, Calif. — Sophomore Ashlyn Brock netted nine goals while freshman Abigail Benavidez added another eight, helping the St. Francis junior varsity water polo team claim three wins in weekend tournament action at Rio Americano High.

The Troubadours split its Friday slate with a 7-6 comeback win against McClatchy followed by a 14-4 loss to Campolindo. Then SFHS picked up a 9-4 win over Oak Ridge followed by a 7-4 victory over San Ramon during Saturday's portion of the tourney. The Troubies faced a 6-4 deficit heading into the final quarter against McClatchy in Friday's opener, but Benavidez, Blythe Bauer and Lydia Vlahos each scored in the finale to overtake the Lions down the stretch.

"Overall, it was a great weekend going 3-1, and the girls played so well as a team," said St. Francis head JV coach Rocky Mudd. "The first game against McClatchy… was a nail-biter of a game. We had a lead on them and they swiftly caught up. It was challenging but the girls played great."

Brock posted a hat trick in the win over McClatchy and had four goals in Saturday's opener with Oak Ridge. Benavidez saved her best for last with three goals against San Ramon. Bauer and Piper Bostrom each had four goals for the tourney.

Mudd also praised her Troubie team in the lone weekend loss. "Even though the score wasn't in our favor, the girls still played their hardest," she said.

The St. Francis JV team rejoins the varsity squad at McClatchy for a rematch on Monday, then plays its season finale at Davis High on Tuesday, October 26.
