McCLELLAN, Calif. – Each of St. Francis junior varsity and frosh squads went undefeated in its respective round-robin pool play, then advanced to the semifinal round of the Championship bracket of the 40th Carmichael Invitation Volleyball Tournament, held at the Capital Sports Center Saturday.

The Troubadours' JV team moves to 22-2 for the year. The SF frosh improves to 21-4.

Oddly, both Troubadour teams played the same schools in bracket play, although in opposite order. The jayvees swept St. Mary's by scores of 25-9, 25-16 in the quarterfinal; then fell to Christian Brothers in straight sets, 25-12, 25-23. The froshies went to a tiebreaker set in a 20-25, 25-13, 15-5 win over the Falcons in their quarterfinal round, then lost to the Rams, also in three: 21-25, 27-25, 15-9.

The frosh side of the tournament featured 22 teams while the JV half fielded 16. Teams grouped into pools, with the top finishers getting seeded in multiple tiers of brackets, with the Championship tier being the highest.

St. Francis JV beat all three of its opponents handily during the round robin, which began at 8 a.m.. The Troubies rolled made quick work of Roseville, 25-5, 25-16; rolled past Mira Loma, 25-6, 25-7, then dispatched West Park, 25-13, 25-16. The SF frosh took part in a five-team pool, beating all four of its opponents in straight sets: Roseville (25-12, 25-17), Weston Ranch (25-16, 25-8), West Valley (25-17, 25-20) and West Park (25-8, 25-16).

This marked the second straight weekend that frosh took on St. Mary's in a tournament. The Troubies defeated the Rams for the team title at Oak Ridge's Christine Craft Memorial tournament on the previous Saturday.

The CIVT also marks the last tourney weekend for the two SF sub-varsity squads. All three teams return to action at Davis on Monday for Sierra Foothill League tripleheader. Frosh begins the night with a 4:30 first serve.
