Troubies post triple sweep of Thundering Herd

ELK GROVE, Calif. – Junior outside hitter Sophia Van Ness hit 9-for-14 without an error while senior setter Kelsey Magley served up seven of her team's 17 aces, as St. Francis compiled a 25-19, 25-7, 25-17 sweep of Elk Grove in the varsity finale of a Delta League girls' volleyball tripleheader Tuesday night.

The Troubadours move to 15-5 for the season and remain unbeaten in Delta League play at 4-0.

Prior to the varsity match, St. Francis also swept Elk Grove in each of the frosh and junior varsity contests. The freshman squad opened with a 25-8, 25-12 victory; then JV made equally quick work with winning scores of 25-9 and 25-5.

Van Ness also tied for the team lead in digs, matching Magley's six. In turn, Magley had 22 assists, leading the Troubies to a solid .243 hitting average. Senior middle blockers Lily Zeff (six kills) and Amanda Silber (3-0-5 hitting) also contributed to the offensive efficiency. Overall, Magley chipped in 2-for-3 as a hitter, plus she blocked a pair of Thundering Herd attacks.

Furthermore, Magley's seven aces led four Troubies who combined for the 17 points at the service line: Ellie Carpenter (5), Veronica Datwyler (3) and Jacqueline Smith (2).

St. Francis returns to Elk Grove on Thursday, this time for a frosh/JV/varsity tripleheader at Sheldon. The first match begins at 4:30 p.m.
