Quiniola, Lowery lead JV Red to 4-0 win over Bulldogs

Quiniola, Lowery lead JV Red to 4-0 win over Bulldogs
SACRAMENTO, Calif. – Junior Madeline Squaglia completed a brace within the first 23 minutes of play, but St. Francis surrendered a late goal to settle for a 2-2 draw in the varsity portion of a Sierra Foothill League girls' soccer tripleheader against Folsom Tuesday night at Cristo Rey's Adamson Family Sports Complex.

The Troubadours, ranked No. 1 in the area by Premier Preps, remains undefeated at 4-0-3. The Bulldogs improve to 2-0-1, with both teams playing their league openers.

St. Francis actually fell into an immediate hole when Folsom senior Kiana Arbis drew a foul inside the box on a corner kick in the second minute. Fellow senior Juliana Sardo converted the ensuing penalty kick. However, the Troubies wasted no time equalizing the contest, as Jada Dwyre delivered a cross from the right flank to Squaglia, who came through with the finish with 36:39 on the clock.

SF proceeded to outshoot its guests for the next 21 minutes, with the Troubies taking the lead thanks to an Estella Bacsafra through ball to Squaglia in the 23rd. Folsom eventually managed shots in the 25th and 36th minutes while holding St. Francis to a Squaglia header, which goalkeeper Sierra Ruehl halted.

The final stretch of the first half served as a harbinger for the second, as the Bulldogs dominated possession despite facing a 6-3 shooting deficit after the break. SF freshman goalkeeper Mia Rabinovitz came up with a big save against Arbis in the 44th, then Zayla Lintag's shot off a corner sailed high, maintaining the one-goal margin. Folsom finally broke through in the 55th minute, with a blast finding its way into the cage.

The Troubies had chances to regain the lead down the stretch. Senior Sofia Rabinovitz drew a foul along the left sideline, but Miley Blough's kick into the box could not find its way to a shooter. In the 71st, Dwyre put a shot on target but Folsom blocked it for a corner kick, which also failed to produce scoring results. Finally, in the extra time, SF was awarded a throw-in deep in its attacking side. Dwyre handled the long throw-in, which fell among Squaglia and Blough plus three Folsom defenders. Squaglia appeared to head the ball into the upper left corner of the net for the game-winner, but the Dwyre's throw was ruled untouched and the apparent goal not counted.

Surprisingly, this is the first meeting between St. Francis and Folsom since the 2017 Sac-Joaquin Section quarterfinals, and the first draw since April of 2010, when the Troubies and Bulldogs were both members of the Delta River League.

The varsity battled followed a 4-0 win for St. Francis' JV Red in the frosh-soph opener. Josie Quiniola scored in the 20th and 45th minutes, Paityn Lowery notched the game's first goal in the 19th then assisted the first Quiniola strike, while Elizabeth McNearney finished a long counterattack with just three minutes remaining. JV Red picked up its second shutout victory of the year in improving to 3-2 overall.

Finally, the Troubies' JV Gold enjoyed a 5-0 victory over Folsom in the nightcap. Emma Kryski struck first with a goal in the first minute of the game, but it took a second-half outburst to truly break open the scoring. Kryski turned an Anna George pass into a goal off the goalkeeper in the 60th, St. Francis benefited from a Bulldog own goal in the 61st, then Monet Zauner headed in a feed from Liv Vasques-Martin in the 64th.

St. Francis then extended its winning margin to 5-0 on a second-chance goal: Eliza Hurley's initial shot was blocked, but Brynn Baker swooped in for the immediate putback in the 74th. Meanwhile, the Troubie defense did not allow a shot until two minutes after that fifth goal, with the Folsom attempt sailing wide right.

The three SF teams continue league play on Thursday in a home tripleheader with Granite Bay. The JV Red opens at 3:30 p.m., varsity follows at 5:30, with JV Gold playing the Grizzlies in the 7:15 p.m. nightcap.
