FOLSOM, Calif. – Seniors Brynley Hodge and Jane Tattersall each netted six goals while junior Karly Okamoto added another three goals and three assists for six total points, as St. Francis stormed past Folsom, 20-7, to kick off its 2024 varsity lacrosse season at Prairie City Stadium Monday night.
The Troubadours, whose only previous competition was a playday of scrimmages at Davis back on February 17, open the year at 1-0. The win also avenges the 19-18 overtime upset to the Bulldogs on that very field in last year's SFL-Delta third-place game.
Hodge also led St. Francis with six draw controls. Elizabeth Barger, just two days removed from helping the Troubie soccer team capture its second NorCal championship, chipped in two goals, an assist and a caused turnover. In fact, the steal and assist went hand-in-hand: Barger intercepted a Folsom clear attempt then set up Okamoto with a goal at the 3:09 mark in the second quarter.
Keira Miles added two goals, Zia Smith scored once and won four draw controls, and freshman goalkeeper Jayel Miller made her SF debut with five saves and a ground ball.
The game actually began quite evenly, with the two teams trading goals during the first six minutes. Maya Reddy, who scored five of her team's seven goals, assisted fellow sophomore Tiffany Chen for the 2-2 equalizer with 5:47 remaining in the first. Then Tattersall assisted Barger for the go-ahead a minute later, before scoring four more goals during what ultimately grew to a 7-0 run for the Troubies.
Reddy went back-to-back on eight-meter attempts to pull Folsom to within a 9-4 deficit early in the second, only for St. Francis to respond with six straight en route to a 15-4 halftime lead. This invoked the running clock for the entire second half. Miller posted three saves in the third quarter, including two against Reddy; then halted the Folsom scoring machine on an eight-meter attempt with 5:40 left in the fourth.
Hodge and Tattersall led the Troubies in scoring in 2023, each scoring a school-record 70 goals. Both players were also among the throng of SF student-athletes who signed National Letters of Intent to Division I programs last fall: Hodge to Xavier, Tattersall to Winthrop.
The varsity win followed a 5-0 shutout loss for the Troubies' junior varsity. However, freshman goalkeeper Claire Gabri was a bright spot for SF, coming up with six saves, including two against Folsom free position opportunities. Lizzie David posted three caused turnovers in her debut while Reese Walker won three draw controls.
Both teams face teams from outside the Sacramento area this week, traveling to Monte Vista on Wednesday before returning home to host Saint Francis of Mountain View at Bella Vista on Saturday.
